The 2012 Ford Transit Connect is equipped with a sealed timing chain that receives continuous lubrication within the engine. The chain connects the crankshaft's end sprocket to the camshafts' end sprockets. Proper alignment of the chain on the sprockets ensures smooth engine operation, but any skipping of a tooth can impact performance. A misaligned timing chain by more than a few degrees could lead to a valve being damaged by the piston. In case of stretching or breakage of the chain, replacement costs can amount to around $700, with the chain itself costing approximately $50. Due to the complexity of the job, it's not advisable for the average car owner to tackle this repair, as dismantling the car is necessary to access the timing chain.
The 2012 Ford Transit Connect comes with both a timing chain and a timing belt.
