The '97 Econoline is lightly restyled but substantially reworked, with new powertrains, and revised interiors. The 1997 7.3-liter V-8 features a 17.5:1 compression ratio, with a 4.11-inch bore and 4.18-inch stroke. Its equipped with a hydraulic electronic direct fuel injection unit. Horsepower was rated at 215, although some models were rated at 225 horsepower. Torque was rated between 425 and 500 foot-pounds. (Torque is the twisting force generated inside the turbodiesel to give the truck its acceleration and pulling power.) The 1997 Ford E-350 equipped with the 7.3 turbodiesel was capable of hauling a little over 3,500-lb.
