It was time for the wife to get a new car so we headed over to Barkau's in Cedarville. We met Tim Border outside shortly after browsing and he was very courteous with helping find the wife something within her interests. After she drove a few vehicles she made her choice. We then headed inside to sign the paperwork while her new vehicle was being prepared for us to take it home, very quick and easy process which is what we preferred. Tim also left little things for her to find inside the vehicle as thank you gifts from him. We appreciate everything they did for us and once I'm ready to get something new we will be heading back to Barkau's in Cedarville.

Lots of little things done to make car purchase better. Like find a $2 bill in our gas lid upon first fill up. Had an issue about 10 days after we bought and they immediately fixed with no charge. Don't buy often but we'll be back!

I drove 400 miles to look a 1992 olds.. I was told by Tim was a car with low miles and ran greatbut it didn't run great the motor WAS SHOT... the car knock real BAD and brakes weren't working good Cruise control didn't work...I was told he just drove the car that morning which he didn't because he would have heard the bad KNOCK in the MOTOR ... and when drove the car it stalled OUT TWO times when I drove it.. he knew NOTHING about the CAR!!!!!!!

We wanted an older 1 owner immaculate kept and serviced SUV and found it on a Sunday evening while perusing the lot in Cedarville after a walk thru the Freeport lot. Our questions were answered quickly via text, phone or in person by Tim Border. The friendliness of Tim & Kevin from the very beginning to the handing over of the keys was appreciated. Tim made sure I/we understood the instrument panel/dash which was helpful leaving Barkau Cedarville at dusk. The financial paperwork was explained very well by Kevin Martin. He got us the interest rate he said he would. Both are assets to the J H Barkau & Sons.

When buying a new or used car, I do not want to be treated with any kind of disrespect as I have had in the past with other dealerships This is the first time I've felt like I mattered to the salesman (Tim Border) When I arrived to pick up the car, It was ALL ready.( full tank of gas, fully waxed, and plated for my state. All I need to do was sign the forms and with in 30 mins ,I was driving home with my new pride and joy. This dealership is the BEST !!!!!!! I will recommend them to all my friends and family. I was looking for a used yet well maintained Trailblazer. I had visited other dealerships in the near Chicago through the Milwaukee Wisconsin area. I then discovered the J H Barkau & Sons Dealership in Cedarville. Other companies that boast a four star or better rating don't hold a candle to this dealership. From the moment we arrived, the salesman (Tim Border) was very friendly, knowledgeable, and answered my questions. He made the morning of car shopping an enjoyable one, and I did purchase a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer. Barkau has a full service center, and they truly go through their vehicles before they are put on the lot for sale, and they are priced reasonably to others in the surrounding area. And what a selection of automobiles they have! I have already told other members of my family about Tim and the dealership, that this is a first stop location when purchasing a car.

I have been purchasing cars from J H Barkau since the early 1980's and was buying from Jim Barkau back then. Over the last 6 years I have been dealing with Jim Mullarkey in my purchases and enjoy working with him. I find Jim to be fair and honest to deal with. Its hard to find a good honest used car sales person these days!! The one thing I would criticize the Cedarville car lot on would be to perhaps to have a more friendly or personable door greeter.....

Jim Mullarkey sold us a beautiful, well cared for 2013 Buick Regal with low mileage on Tues. This is the third used car we have purchased from Jim and J. H. Barkau and Sons. The other two cars were extremely dependable and the one we traded in, we had for 14 years. The other, our daughter drove all through college and beyond. Each time, we told Jim what type of car we were looking for and the price range. I have been told many times by my family "If you want to buy a car go to JH Barkau and sons and ask for Jim". I did just that and found the experience with Jim to be excellent. I recently purchased a 2005 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab from J.H. Barkau in Cedarville. I showed up without an appointment and their sales manager, Kevin Martin, was more than happy to fit me in what seemed like a very busy day for the man. He let me test drive a few vehicles i was interested in. I made a decision, he ran the numbers and next thing I knew I had a truck. It was really painless and easy. Here's where it puts them above other car dealerships. The next day the front right brake caliper was sticking making the vehicle undriveable. I bought the vehicle without any warranty. I called them up to let them know what was going on. Kevin personally took me to the service department wrote the vehicle up, gave me a loner vehicle, and fixed my truck free of charge. There was no arguing or I'm sorry its your problem now. I will be purchasing all my future vehicles from Barkau & Sons without a doubt. Thanks Kevin!

Jim has always helped my husband and I find the perfect vehicles I just recently lost my husband and had two trucks that I could not continue to make the payments. Jim was wonderful to help me with the trade ins and find the the truck with all the features I wanted that the other vehicles had and lowered my payment drastically. I just purchased my 3rd minivan from J.H. Barkau and Sons. We found the vehicle online earlier in the week and showed up to look at it 10mins before the company closed. Tim Border was the first to greet us when we entered the building and ended up staying 30 past close time. Very great guy. We made an appointment to come in today and test drive. I ended up leaving with the vehicle today and a wonderful experience. Tim is a great salesman to work with. Very understanding, willing to help, honest and not pushy at all. The wife and I walked into the Dealership want a low mileage SUV but had no idea what brand or options we like or needed. When all was said and done we drove 2 different brands and looked over 15 different versions. Finally we decided on a 2012 Equinox, they washed it and filled it with gas. And our salesmen Tim Border took the time to program our phones to the car set up the XM radio and On Star. He spent at least an hour walking us through the options. The whole process was smooth and comfortable. I reallt recommend this Dealer ship and Tim. Job well done...

We had been car searching for about a month. We were looking for a used car between the $5000 to $6000. range. We chose to shop from Craigslist as we thought we would get a better deal and knowledge of our next car. We spent days driving all over the area and meeting really nice people, but every car had some problem that we didn't want to make it ours. After endless Internet searches on Cargurus.com we chose a dealership about 40 minutes away based on their customer service awards. We did not call first, just showed up to look at some used Cadillacs. The salesman, Jim, immediately introduced himself and we proceeded to look and drive several cars. The car we knew would be ours hadn't been listed yet on the internet. It was perfect for us with a great one owner Carfax history. The car shopping experience was easy and the car buying went smoothly, We would definitely do this again and we would recommend Jim Mullarkey.

I actually called and made an appt. with him to see a minivan on their website and before I got there he had found a different one which was the same model but had lower miles, more options, and a cheaper price! Made us feel welcome, and took the stress out of finding and buying a car. I have dealt with other dealers and left without buying because I felt like they were trying to swindle me out of more money; not the case here! This was my first time buying with JH Barkau as I live about 2.5 hours away from the dealership but I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of service I was provided. I was first put in contact with Kevin Martin who did an excellent job answering all of my questions since I wanted to make sure it would be worth the long drive. Once I had all of my questions answered, I made the drive where I was put in contact with Joe Shores. The help and advice we received while looking for our car was both an enjoyable and comfortable experience. Nils knew so much about each of the vehicles that we test drove, the pros and the cons, and had the vehicles that we wanted to test drive running and cooling off so that when we drove them, we weren't distracted by being uncomfortable. Nils sold us with his knowledge of vehicles, never any pressure, and we left feeling relaxed knowing that we bought the vehicle we wanted. I visited a lot of dealerships in the Chicago suburbs. Most of them had higher prices on the cars than advertised online. Most of them immediately started playing games. Some of them were selling wrecked or damaged cars. I finally decided to drive AWAY from Chicago and found J H Barkau & Sons.I was relieved to find that the car had the price as advertised online and was not wrecked. John Bottoms was very easy to deal with. Definitely worth the drive.

I don't even know where to begin. First, Tim Border , of J.H. Barkau & Sons could write a manual for all the dealerships in the country. I contacted him about a'97 Chevy Astro van. He told the exact condition of the vehicle and offered to pick me up at the airport. Frank Ward was there when I arrived in Chicago and brought me the 140 mi. back to Barkau's.. On the way we stopped for lunch and he refused to let me pay. The van was exactly as he described and the photos showed. Also, He had changed all filters, oil, and transmission fluid. Oh, I almost forgot, Tim had the gas tank filled. Paperwork was a snap. Tim made a pot of fresh coffee and we had coffee while we paperwork was completed. A couple of signature later, , a couple bottles of water for the trip, and a photo of me with the van and I was on the way back to New Orleans, At 79 yrs old I've had many experiences with auto dealers, but never has any come close to approaching Barkau's , and particularly Mr. Border"s customer service. Maybe that's why they receive the Number 1 in the state award every year. Thank you Mr. Border

And I hate dealing with car dealerships even more. But we were interested in this vehicle and made an appointment to go see it. It was a 90 mile drive which took us several hours. When we arrived the vehicle we were interested in was sitting out front, ready, and running so that it was already cool when we got into it. We were greeted by Tim Border, and he gave us a suggested test drive route. We drove the car and noted that there was a generator light on in the car. We were interested in the vehicle and asked them to run the numbers. They did, offering us a very fair allowance on our trade in, and got numbers that suited us. Several things stood out in this experience for me. We were hoping to drive our new vehicle home, but there was a generator light on, and Tim informed me that the owner was not comfortable with us driving it home several hours away in the dark, for fear that the generator light indicated a bad alternator and we would end up stranded. They insisted on keeping the car to get it into the service center the next day to check the generator light. They then offered to repair the car, (at no charge) and DELIVER the vehicle to us after it was repaired so we didn't have to make the trip a second time. The financing paperwork was the fastest I had ever experienced for any loan. There was a slight mix up on the interest rate and it ended up being slightly higher than they had originally quoted us, so they altered the price of the vehicle in order to account for the raised interest rate, and to keep the payments within a few dollars of what they originally quoted us. They even took our picture with the our new vehicle to commemorate the experience! I received a message this morning to inform us that the alternator did indeed need repaired, so I was even more grateful that they insisted on keeping the vehicle to be checked. Overall, it was an extraordinarily positive experience, and that is saying a lot from someone who absolutely despises car shopping and all that it entails. Thank you very much for being concerned for our safety, taking pride in your integrity, and providing customer service above and beyond.

Tim was very helpful with my husband by phone, text & fax as we were looking for a more gas efficient vehicle but still on a limited budget. He really went a mission to find something gas efficient and still affordable. I was at work and we live 2 hours away. He offered to wait for us. By the time we got there it was getting late but both he and the finance guy treated us as if we were there during normal business hours. They never rushed us or acted annoyed at the late hour. Even my husband was impressed that they didn't give us a "car salesman" act at all. Tim showed is what we had. He answered our questions. He showed us how everything worked on it and sent us out for a test drive. He even told us a good place to go and where to turn around since we are from our of town. Tim is very friendly calm and helpful. I was so tired after work I was concerned that I wouldn't be up for trying to trade a vehicle but God really blessed us with this experience. Tim is a great customer service person because he really took care of us and what we needed. I totally recommend him and his dealership. They are honest friendly and really care about people. We love our GMC Terrain and a very thankful for the most pleasant vehicle purchase ever. Even late at night in the rain-very genuine and pleasant guy. Well worth the 2 hour drive.

My husband and I began our day at Barkau in Cedarville. We had a game plan in place, which cars to look at and test drive, how much we were willing to spend and how little patience we had for a pushy salesperson. Tim Border showed us a car that we liked. He was very knowledgeable in the safety and efficiency of this vehicle. We immediately liked him because we didn't feel like he was pushing us to do something we didn't want to do. My husband and I decided that we needed to do a little bit more research so we went into Rockford and visited about 15 other car places looking for this exact car for comparrison. After all that work and ALL the pushy salespeople we found nothing that came even close in car or service to that in Cedarville. We immediately called Tim and drove back to Cedarville with our three children to purchase the car. The purchasing process was extremely easy, my children held it together in the short amount of time that it took for the paperwork to be written up and the car to be handed over to us. Tim Border was my sales agent. He was very cordial and respectful. The amount of interior & exterior detailing that poured into a vehicle of 120,000 miles is what caught my attention. The engine compartment was clean and in brand new condition. The truck itself was very clean and looked like a brand new used vehicle. I drove it home with peace of mind. Our church had been in the market for a Super Duty truck for a couple months and were consistently striking out at the "truck centers". Upon a search of Auto Trader we found a Chevy Silverado 2500 with low miles a good price at the dealership. After having my Land Rover for a few years and realizing I couldn't afford the general maintenance of it, or the repairs it needed, I knew it was time to trade it in. I searched all over for another SUV and finally found the one I knew I had to have. A few years older than my Rover, but it was a GMC Jimmy in excellent condition and extremely low miles. I requested information about it as soon as I saw it online, and the very next morning Tim Border emailed me back ready to get me started on making a decision. Went up to look at it a couple of times, loved what I saw so we worked out a trade-in. Everyone at the dealership was so great and helpful! My dad was concerned cuz the car pulled to the right, so Tim made sure it was sent to their service shop to get double checked and fixed up for me! They even put the truck on hold so my dad and I could make arrangements and a week later I picked it up, dropped my Rover off, and I'm as happy as can be! They had the Jimmy washed and the tank filled when I got there. Absolutely amazing and awesome people to work with! Thank you so much!!

Three years ago, Jim Mullarkey helped us decide on a 2008 Chrysler T&C to replace our 2000 model. The deal was great then and the deal was even better when we traded up to a 2012 Chrysler T&C Limited last weekend! We were opportunistically shopping and Jim knows I'm a die-hard T&C Limited driver, having driven one for fifteen years. He directed us to the 2012 model for a test drive on Saturday and later that day sent us a quote. On Sunday, I emailed him to write it up and we'd close it later in the week.I loved that the deal was financially sound right out of the gate, no quibbling. The trade-in on my 2008 was substantial and Barkau's refunded the unused portion of our 5-yr extended warranty. We drove off with this great 2012 T&C and a new extended warranty. I also loved that Jim was willing to work remotely with me through emails and texts--my preferred means of communication!This is the third vehicle we've purchased from Jim Mullarkey at JH Barkau and Sons. I bought a vehicle from Jim Mullarkey last week. Jim was friendly, competent, and great to work with. Now that I've had the vehicle for a short time, I've noticed that 2 interior bulbs are burned out, as well as 1 brake light bulb. Plus, the rear window wiper on the minivan is not working properly (it misses the window) and will have to be fixed. That seems a little penny wise and pound foolish from your service department. Other than those matters, I'm very satisfied.

I helped my son get into a used Honda CR-V this weekend. I didn't think I would be able to co-sign for the loan but the dealer helped me to understand that I actually have a great credit rating, despite a bankruptcy in my history. This is the second vehicle we've purchased from Jim Mullarkey at Barkau's. Satisfied with our first purchase a few years ago, we gave him a call when we decided it was time to trade in our other vehicle. Our appointment started out with the intent to discuss trade in value on our current vehicle and maybe take a look at a few possible options. I've been doing research online for a couple weeks prior so we narrowed a wish list down and I mentioned what that was to Jim before the appointment. Jim had two immediate possibilities waiting for us that day. After test driving the 1st one, we fell in love! It hit everything on my wish list except a sunroof, BUT it had a DVD player instead. So worth the compromise as we have a 2year old. We came back from the test drive and they offered more for my trade than I was expecting, this had to be too good to be true. Nope!! It was exactly what we needed, everything I asked for and under our budget. We were even able to take it home that day after John in financing assisted with getting a great rate!!! So easy! We test drove the Acadia we were interested in and Tim was able to have all of the numbers available for us upon our return. As a young, single woman, It can be scary to make big purchases alone - sometimes you can be "targeted" and I'm weary of sales pitches. Not the experience I had with Tim Border as my salesman! He took the time to help me figure out what car would suit me best, was personable, straightforward listened to my concerns. I did a lot of research before choosing a car, so I asked lots of questions and he happily answered my questions thoroughly, factually, and honestly. Willie helped me with a trade-in and financing, and got me a rate much lower than I thought I could even qualify for. They prepared the cumbersome tax paperwork for me (I am an out-of-state resident) and, when it was time to drive off with my new vehicle, I had everything I needed and then some! Highly recommend!

Tim was our salesman and he worked to accommodate our needs. We negotiated and believe that we came out with price on a 2009 Toyota that was fair to everyone. When we discovered that one of the heated seats didn't work Tim had their mechanic check it out. He confirmed it and they offered a much better price if we were to take it to Toyota for the seat and some factory recalls. Since we wanted to close the deal we were happy to accept their offer as if they were to take it to Toyota for the recalls it would have delayed the deal about a week. When we took it to Toyota they had to order parts and we had to come back so we are glad it worked outs way to everyone's advantage and we didn't have to wait for them to care for it. I would definitely buy another car from Barkau (and Tim). (This was back in July of 2014 and I am just getting to write this now.)

My husband and I were really interested in the Chrysler Town and Country vans. This dealership had more than 3 that we wanted to look at. Tim was super helpful and emailed me within an hour of my request online. He even responded to each email within a few hours and answered all my questions. A few hours before I even drove 45min to get there, he even emailed to let me know a van we were interested in was sold. This dealership is super friendly and honest. They went above and beyond. Needed to replace a van after ours was totalled in an accident. It was a terrific, helpful no pressure experience. Tim had two vehicles transferred from the other location for my convenience and had service handle a couple of minor issues with the van i was interested in before I had committed to the vehicle. They just made the van great for whoever would be purchasing. the purchase was straight forward, no extended back and forths or drama. I felt I got a good deal on a clean, serviced vehicle and would recommend to everyone. We have only lived in the area a short time and will definitely be back when we need to replace our other vehicles.

Ok, here we go. Found (on the internet), what we hoped would be the car for us. However the trip would be two and a half hours each way. Called the dealership, and the phone was answered by Tim Border, he assured us the car was on the lot and would welcome our visit. Just based on his pleasant manner, we felt something was right, and the trip would be worthwhile. Well the car was just what we`d been looking for, we were treated like old friends by Tim and the staff, and the deal was made. They were efficient, and made the buying experience great fun. My fiance and myself just went to look. We got there and started to look around, (we knew what we were looking for), we couldnt find the traverse that we found online. Jim walked up to us and asked us how we were doing and what we were looking for, we told him a 2013 traverse. He went inside and said it may be at the other store, he would check for us. We went inside and i started to look around, and i notcied that there it was in the show room. We told him that we found it and that we saw it online, and we were interested. It was in the show room, we thought for sure we would not be able to test drive it, but he said it was not a problem at all. He got some guys help him move the other vehicles and we test drove it, and we knew that this is what we were looking for. The sales team was great and very imformative. We got a great deal on our vehicle that we knew we both wanted. We are very happy with our purchase, and we would definatly recommand this dealer.

We've purchased 4 vehicles from Jim now. He always takes the time necessary to find what we're looking for, never hard sells anything or acts patronizing, and goes above and beyond to ensure that we're well taken care of. Great guy, great dealership. One less than positive point to make though: the new financing guy.....if I didn't respect Jim as much as I do, I'd have walked out. Pushing customers to purchase add-ons that they don't want or need and then quizzing them when they refuse to purchase is the height of obnoxious. Tone that guy down and you'll have the perfect staff. Also necessary to say, the service department is fabulous. We are invariably provided excellent service and repairs for a reasonable price. Kudos to Jamie and his staff for that.

I was very pleased with my experience at J.H. Barkau. Nils contacted me right away from my inquiry on CarGurus and was able to get me preapproved to purchase a car over the phone. That was great because I live about an hour away from the dealership and so wouldn't have wanted to make more than one trip down.When I arrived, it took a little while for someone to notice that I was there, but that may have been because I accidentally went through the back door. Nils did a great job of showing me around to all of the cars that were available and we even test drove the Chrysler up to the dealership in Freeport to see the cars there. He wasn't pushy at all and obviously wanted to make sure that I was able to purchase a vehicle that meet my specifications.The car was on sale and at a reasonable price, so I didn't really bother trying to haggle with them, so I don't know how that would have gone. The finance guy was very helpful as well and got me a great rate. Overall, the experience took a bit longer than I was expecting to get all of the paper work filled out, but this is the first time I have purchased a car on finance, so I don't have anything with with to compare. The vehicles on the lot were all in very nice condition and it was a great experience. I would definitely recommend them.

I was in a car accident on January 24, 2014 and my car was totaled. My husband and I needed a car that would get me back and forth to Beloit twice a week and up to whitewater once to move our daughter back and forth to school up there. I contacted Tim via internet and he found us a van in our price range. We had gone to sawicki motors 2 times to no avail. Even we told them what our price range was, they still would not come down.Tim gave us a little discount on the van because of the amount of rust it had on it, and we walk off with the van that day. We were going to wait until our mechanic could look at, but my husband decided we could take it home for the price they offered us. We told our church about J.H Barkau and they are looking for a shuttle bus for our elderly members. We are sure that we will make them are car dealership. Our family has returned here multiple times, we purchased our 4th vehicle here, and it is our 2nd from Brandon! He has always been very knowledgeable and straight forward with us. Answers the questions very positively, and if he doesn't know, he goes and asks! Much better than someone who makes up an answer to sell a car. The vehicle was not "on-site" so, instead of telling us to go to the other location, he went and got his personal vehicle and gave a us a "chauffeured" ride to the drivers door of the vehicle we ended up buying. We were on a time limit (with kids coming home from school) and he accommodated our limits by taking only the info we could supply, and scheduled a time for us to come back. When we came back, surprise! All the paperwork was neatly made up in a nice straightforward way so we could ask questions if needed before signing. So neat, there were no questions! From start to finish (including going to another location) we picked out, test drove, conversed and bought our new car in under 2 hours (financing included onsite!). I called Tim on the way to Cedarville. He had the car ready, warmed up and waiting for my wife and me to take it for a test drive. We liked the car and wanted to see what kind of deal he would give us. We were pleased with the first offer of trade. I gave him the cash offer and drove it home. We are waiting for a manual which Tim said he would get for us as well as some decals. Through out all of my conversations with Tim he has been extremely helpful. These guys are Great! This was the easiest car purchase I've made, they made it so easy! Usually I pay cash but I wanted a car loan on my credit, so they worked it all out for me and everything was fast and easy. Keven was so helpful, we had a situation where our primary car went into the shop at the last minute and we weren't going to be able to get down to the dealership to finalize the new vehicle, and I was going to rent a car. Our salesman offered to pick us up! I couldn't believe it. Once we made the decision to purchase the car, they new we were on a tight schedule, so when we got there everything was ready, final inspection, paperwork, disclosures,, all the loan paperwork, everything was ready for us. We got all the information we needed, all our questions were answered, and we were on the road in record time. I will be needing a car soon for my teen who is about to start driving, and I will definitely be back to see Keven (our salesman ) and Brandon ( the finance guy ) to purchase that car. Tim Border and Joe Shore those 2 dealers done great job helping us out with finance. Tim Border is my dealer and Joe Shore is my interpreter to help me out to communicate because i am deaf. I found those guys online when I was looking for my new truck. I've sent an email asking for more info and got a quick response from Joe. After few emails we schedule an appointment for a test drive. I showed up first thing in the morning Joe was already bringing the car around. He was very friendly and professional. After we agreed on a price and all I worked with Brandon. Also very professional and friendly. All my question were answered with both of those guys. The entire process went very fast. I was in and out in 2 hours. Tim and Kevin were both great, and i don't mean that lightly. They answer all our questions and took care of the problem with our old car that had stop working. Tim even picked us up and took us (Al & Sarah) to the Dealership . Kevin took loaded off our mind by helping us with our references and even charging my cell phone their hospitality is off the chart. the price, we felt was a very good deal. Everything was clean inside and out , tires and all. Tim took the time to show how use some that come when driving a vehicle you know little about (like the tire trackion button ) and what type gas to put in car. they were so helpful in more ways than one. When thought that we were going have to wait to purchase the car because the down payment Kevin step right in with a solution. I'm still having little time realize how much of a burden he took off our shoulders. because of him we were able to move forward and purchase our new car with reasonable payments as well. When I first came through the doors at J.H. Barkau & Sons in Cedarville, I was met with a friendly greeting from Jim Mullarkey. Without missing a beat we were able to get to business and begin searching for the perfect car for me. I was just looking not expecting to buy. The selection was plentiful and I found the truck for me. There was no pressure put on me, over a three day period I test drove the truck 4 times all concerns were remedied. I left Barkau's happy with the truck I wanted and paid the price I wanted. we were impressed with jims knowledge of the vehicle answering all of our questions. he found us the vehicle we wanted and for the price that we were needing. when we arrived we got prompt attention . he greeted us in the lot ,was very friendly. was never pushy on buying and allowed us time to look over the vehicle on our own . we could tell by his office that he takes great pride in his work and enjoys taking good care of his customers. even though the dealership closed at 4 jim stayed with us until after 5 and all the paperwork was completed. he walked us out and our car was completely filled with gas and license plates already on. jim is an excellent salesperson to work with.we would highly recommend this dealership to anyone. we would have appreciated a little less pressure on the extended warranty sales. but, overall was a great experience and will use barkau again.

Jim did a great job at find a car that I wanted for the price I wanted. I looked and looked for a car and I could not find one of my interest then Jim came along and I explain to him of the car that I was looking for and no longer then 10-15 minutes he found the car that I was looking for. as soon as I said I really like this car he got straight to business he got me into his office talked prices agreed on it filled out paper work then sent to the financing office and Jim had me in and out stress less and happy. I have had the pleasure ( or in many cases displeasure ) of dealing with many dealerships in my lifetime. Never have I been as pleased with the experience I have had at J.H Barkau and Joe Shores in Cedarville. In March I bought a used Ford Ranger with intentions on using it when I retired in 2014 , I purchased it at a very fair price and truly enjoyed the dealing and financing in such a professional manner. Well things happen when you buy a 17 year old vehicle with 150,000 miles on it . In late October I experienced some major problems . I contacted Joe more to thank him for the Birthday E-mail he had sent me than any thing else and he asked how the truck was running . I explained to him the issues I was having and that I really did not expect anything from them after all it was 17 years old and I knew you buy older vehicles as is . At this point I was floored when he said he would have a wrecker sent over to Rockford to pick it up and work with me to resolve this problem ! I tried to explain that this was not my intention to get some help in this matter and he reassured me that they ( J.H. Barkau ) wanted to make everything right . Well I cannot give the people at this dealership enough thanks , they have brought back the tradition of trust and honesty that have been lost in so many ways in today's way of doing business .... Jim Mullarkey has been the reason for our continuing to come back to Barkau's. He is very personable and easy to deal with. He listens to us as far as our budget goes and what type of vehicle we are looking for. He knows the lot and "steers" us to the many options to choose from, but in a non pushy way. Barkau's has been great when car service and/or maintenance is required. They provide loaner cars that are nice and in good working condition. We did not know Jim until over 20 years ago when my husband and his business partner bought their first van from him. Jim set the tone for repeat business from us and my husband's former business partner as well. Besides Jim Mullarkey, Brandon Goecks was very friendly and helpful when it came all the paperwork involved at signing on Saturday, October 19, 2013. Jim made sure that we got things in order and finalized in a very timely manner so that we could be on our way to Indiana for the birth of our grandson. We received the phone call while sitting in his office, so time was of the essence. Barkau's is our dealership of choice and as long as Jim is there, that is where we will buy.

Jim was my salesman. I did not "want" to buy a car, I "had" to buy car (that makes shopping for a car not so fun!). He understood this, asked me what was important, listened to what I was looking for and patiently helped me sort out the options they had available. They have a huge inventory of nice cars for under 10,000. I found the cars they had were much nicer in that price range than what I had seen in Rockford, Madison and smaller lots around. This, with his knowledge, made this process very easy. First time customer, will be the first place I loook next time. Hopefully next time will be because I want a new car (they sell new cars too)!

Zion church needed another van because of our growth in the youth group. We have been looking for a van for over 6 months. We started out looking at 15 passenger vans but our insurance comp. would not insure us. Jim then got us a list of 12 passenger vans that would work for us. Jim was always available when we came in unannounced to look at vehicles. With a church you have to take everything to a committee for approval. Jim worked it out that I could take the van to a board meeting to show the rest of the committee. That move is what allowed us to close the deal. With all the information on that site I know everything I needed to know by the time I got to the dealership. All I needed to do was make sure what was on the web site was fact. It was. Everyone at the dealership was friendly, courteous, and helpful. The only thing left to do after the test drive was get the money straight. Again Barkau came through with a very fair deal. We traveled 140 miles to visit the Dealership because of the selection of the vehicle we were looking for. Joe Shores was more than helpful without being pushy. We bought the vehicle and drove it home. They went above customer service by staying after hours to make sure the Van was road ready, and then again by getting the title to us the next week so we could take the vehicle across the Canadian border without problems. I would not hesitate to travel the distance to purchase another car.

In the purchases we made in the previous decade or so we failed to check their inventory. But recently we were looking to find a car with better fuel economy. We had been through the area car lots not finding anything to our liking. Then I checked online and looked at their website. I was pleasantly surprised to see a great inventory on low mileage recent model cars available. I sent an email to inquiry about a specific Malibu and received an email back, almost immediately, from Tim Borders. We then talked on the phone and I stated what we were looking for and Tim was very helpful and not overbearing in trying to sell a car. We visited the Cedarville and Freeport car lots and eventually purchased a 2012 Buick Regal. Through the whole process Tim was very accommodating and knowledgeable as he answered every question. When we finally narrowed our choice to two vehicles again Tim helped us weigh the pros and cons of each vehicle. There was never any pressure to buy but just the philosophy of offering a fair trade in price, fair book price, and helping the customer as they determine what is best for them. It was a great experience working with Tim and H J Barkau & Sons. I highly recommend them and will consider them first for our next automotive needs.

Tim Border was a pleasure to work with from the first time I called for information on used vehicles until the evening when we left with out new (used!) van. I live an hour and a half from JH Barkau, so I wanted to do the vehicle trade in one trip. Tim made this happen by having the details of the financing worked out before we made the trip. When we realized we could wait no longer for a 2nd vehicle, I started searching the internet. Still struggling through a pile of medical bills didn't leave us a lot to work with and I did not want to risk buying from a private owner. When I found the Barkau website I was really happy. No question was left unanswered and we were able to get preapproved online. The inventory was huge and I found EXACTLY what I was looking for.We were contacted by Nils Sandstrom who made buying our van as easy as going through a McDonald's Drive Thru! Everyone we dealt with was friendly and helpful even though we were not a big sale. Looked at the easy to navigate website for this dealer on a Thursday night and by Friday evening, I was driving a new (to me) Chevy Equinox! My salesman, Jim Mularkey, was very easy to deal with, he was very helpful, not pushy.....and very considerate. I feel he did get the best trade in value for my vehicle. Tim and the entire staff were very friendly from the time I stepped onto the lot and through the entire buying process. Nobody seemed desperate to make a sale or made me feel hurried to make a purchase in any way. They gave me a very fair trade and worked to get as close to the payments I needed as they could. We went on the intranet to search for the vehicle we were looking for. Found the 2004 Ford Ranger we purchased at the Cedarville Dealership. We were truly amazed at the inventory at a dealership in such a small community. We had never dealt with this dealership before or any of the employees. We were 100% satisfied. We were looking to replace our 2004 Mercury Mountaineer but really didn't know what we were looking for. Tim was great in that when we showed up on the lot he introduced himself and let us just look around and scope out the vehicles that may interest us. It was not a high pressure situation were the dealer is constantly in your ear with every car you look at. We have a large family of 8 and were looking for a 12 passenger van. I found the dealership online as they had several vans. 2 in partticular sounded like they might be good and at a price that was fair. We live about 2 hours away from the dealership but after several helpful phone conversations with Tim Borders and setting up an appointment that worked for us we drove down to Cedarville. We met Tim and looked over the van we were most interested in. Another newer van caught our attention and we waivered between the 2 vehicles. Tim patiently worked with us and tried to help with providing info as much as he could. We settled on the 2nd van, then offered our car on trade. We made a good deal and they were very good and not high pressure in the deal. We would recommend Tim as a salesman and the dealership in their selection as well. I wish they were closer to Milwaukee however.

My husband and I came to JH Barkau to look at the fleet of 12/15 passenger vans on the lot. I had done most of the research already by finding the vehicles available, pricing, car fax reports, etc. The main goal was to TEST DRIVE the vehicle and Tim approached us immediately upon our arrival with a smile on his face. We explained we came to look for a few vans to test drive for our large family. He gave us time to look and when we had found 1 or 2 that we were interested, he helped us get to test driving and taking care of any questions we had. He also took care of our kids by suggesting that they come into the dealership to have them play while we discuss the pricing of the vehicles. What a guy! He even gave them some gatorade, salt water taffy, and suckers. Nothing like keeping the kids happy. Tim was very patient with us as we spoke to our banker and at the end of the day, we completed the sale of our 12 passenger family van with the help of Tim's answers we had on the vehicle and friendly support. Thanks Tim for a nice and smooth experience.

The transaction was pretty seamless & the paper work all prepared to help shorten the delivery. When I walked in the door at Barkau of Cedarville, I already knew what vehicle I was looking for...I was looking for the right sales person. A sales person who I could feel comfortable dealing with, one that would listen with respect to my needs and concerns, someone I felt I could trust. I found that in Tim - he makes the entire process of choosing and purchasing a vehicle feel like you are dealing with family. I had already walked away from a similar vehicle at a dealership closer to home because of the callous treatment I had received from one of their salesmen. Tim listened and understood my personal vehicle needs and was very knowledgeable about the vehicle I chose. He completely surprised me by thoroughly explaining every knob and button on the dash - I thought I would have to drive away and learn everything by trial and error. Thank you Tim!

I called on the phone to see if they had this truck. Then I had told them that I would be in the next day to look at it. I gave them my name and what I was looking to trade in. The next day I showed up and Tim came out and greeted me as I was looking at the truck. He knew who I was and showed me the vehicle. He was very knowledgeable about it. Nils was friendly and have known him for a long time. Car was on sale and we had no trade in but they were still set on price. Got a good car for a good price. This dealership is rather limited on test drives. Some other dealerships were more open and let us take a car for longer periods of time. When we started looking we went to Nils and ended up back there getting one of the first cars we looked at. Not a high pressure dealership, but not laid back as some. Over all a good deal.

My wife spoke with Jim Mullarkey to verify vehicle was at Cedarville dealership, it was not but said he'd get it there. The next day Jim got it to Cedarville, had us call as we left home so he could have the car warmed up and ready for us. Knowing we could not get there until 6:00PM and they closed at 7 he had "the wheels in motion" should we decide to purchase the vehicle, and apparently had advised the personnel that would be involved in the transaction ahead of time that we would be coming in late. Jim met us at the door as we pulled in, test drove our trade-in while we test drove the car we inquired about. He was very friendly with a great personality. Jim was to the point about the car and the price without a lot of "flowery" words, professional yet personable. He was very understanding when my wife cried about having to trade-in her "baby". We purchased the car and Mike, the "financial" guru, had to work OT, (that's Own Time), to complete all the necessary paperwork yet did not try to rush us and was most pleasant towards us. Give Jim a call when you are ready to purchase your next vehicle!

It was a GREAT PLEASURE to do business with Jim. We found a car we liked on the internet and called Jim to discuss. He made sure it was at that facility when we arrived. It was waiting for us with a full tank of gas and since it was so cold outside , he even had the heat on for us. It was sad to let my old car go, because it was such a wonderful car, but it was time to move on. We would highly recommend J.H. Barkau especially Jim. He was the BEST! I wouldn't say the owners are as friendly as Jim, but eventually, we came to an agreement on price. Best of all, we now have a BEAUTIFUL newer car and it's very pretty and rides really nice.

My Husband & I did not care for the Salesman Nick Connell at Barkau in Cederville Il.Nick was not knowledgable about the vehicle, did not go over the vehicle features at all, Nick would walk away from us to find out info, did not come back to us with answers, we would have to get help from someone else, then he would suddenly appear. We were told he was rather new. Also Nick got in our new vehicle to take it to the service department, in which the service department is off the property of the dealership. Nick did not have our permission, as we were upset because the vehicle had my purse in it, all my personal info was in my purse, anyone plus nick could of had a hey day with my personal info, I do not know these people. My husband & I were very upset, and we let the manager know how we felt. I do have high regards for Barkau dealership, as I have bought from this dealership in the past. Not high presure like alot of salesmen I have talked with. My wife and I have been looking for a Blazer for about a year. This was the one, low miles and a good price. I would recommend Tim to anyone who needs a car and wants to be treated right.

I also have a great experience when I call or stop in to see my salesman John Bottoms and it is great to see Jim Berkau there at te ready as well!I like the way John helps me found a car that will work for me and don't feel he or the dealership is pushing any car on me.The best part of a used car purchase at Barkua is that they really check out the cars prior to putting then up for sale and this means you can buy with confidence since they stand behind their muti-point check!Thanks again for another great buying experience!

From the time I arrived on the lot to the time I left, there was no pressure on making a sale. I had found the vehicle I was interested in and they answered all my questions honestly and completly, even as to what might need to be replaced in the future. the staff was friendly and helpful in every way. The entire sales transaction took around 1 hr including finding me great financing at a very low rate. I will be a long time customer and would be happy to send family and friends to experience for themselves the best dealership I have been to in the area.

Jim was absolutely fantastic. I purchased my very first car from him back in 2001 and have gone through Jim ever since. I live in the Peoria area and didn't think twice when I drove up to see Jim when I needed a new car. He is so patient with what I am looking for and especially this time, he has hit the nail on the head with the utmost perfect car for me. I feel like a million bucks in my Mercury Milan. He also worked with me on sale so I was comfortable with what I was paying. I have never experienced this good of customer service anywhere else. I will never purchase from anyone else again. When I got to work yesterday, everyone screeched with delight on the beauty I pulled up in. I told them they will never find a deal like I did down here in Peoria. Everyone was really friendly and they helped me out a lot with getting a car loan. The only thing i am displeased with is that once i got home & have been driving my car, the check engine light is on. It was on at the dealership and they assured me that it was because the wrong gas cap was on the car, they replaced the gas cap and the check engine light turned off. But now that i have had the car for 2 weeks, the check engine light is on again, i checked the gas cap and that is not the problem this time.

Nils was very good to work with. We visited 5 or 6 different dealerships and Nils was the only saleman to contact us after a visit plus he did it with a typed letter and not an impersonal message on the phone. He came in on his day off to allow us a final test drive and sold us our car. He was very helpful even to the point of recommending cars at the Freeport location. He touched up a paint-chip and through in the rest of the paint touch-up. A good-guy. Don H.

I have had many great experiences with Barkau of Cedarville. The employees are very friendly and seem to genuinely want my experience to be comfortable. They go out of their way to make this happen. I would have liked the price to be lowerbut settled with the deal rather than have the inconvience of shopping around more. Also the interior of the vehicle wasn't as clean as I thought it would be. But all in all it was a good experience and I would return and refer others.

I started one day just by looking at vehicles not intending to buy anytime soon. I was 11 payments away from paying off my current car, but I felt I needed to be in something a little more winter reliable (previous actions had proven my car was not winter safe). I had found one vehicle that I had liked at another dealership, but I felt very rushed and not 100% positive I was making the right choice by going with that dealership.A family member & a close family friend highly advised me to check out Barkau's one more time and see what Pat could find for me. I knew after testing driving the Ford Edge at another dealership it was exactly what I wanted. So I called Pat at the Freeport store and gave him the specific's of what I want and did not want in a vehicle.Pat called me back a few hours later explaining what he found for me. To my surprise after going to the store after work he found EXACTLY what I was looking for in better condition plus more then what I asked for. That made me extremely happy, almost like a kid on Christmas. Who am I kidding, I felt like a kid on Christmas when I saw my new car on the lot. Instead of giving me several choices to choose from to confuse me and make it harder to choose, he took everything I said and found the PERFECT and EXACT car I was asking for. He went out of his way to find what I wanted and had it brought to them because they did not have it on their lot. That to me, says a lot about a dealership. Instead of putting me in something I would not be satisfied with, he went above and beyond to get me what I would love. I did not feel rushed, pressured or even pestered to buy a vehicle from them. I do not rush into desicions like this very fast. I like to be sure I am doing the right thing, and Pat was very genuine in making me feel like this was going to be a very great investment for me. Where as before I felt at the other dealership I was just another $$ sign and they truly did not care, they were just trying to make a sale.Thank You so much Pat & everyone at J.H. Barkau & Son's for getting me exactly what I wanted in a vehicle and for getting me into it the same day it came on the lot! John J. really did do a wonderful job at keeping me at the payment I was comfortable with and not toying around trying to make a sale. John was up front and showed me all the numbers & got me a really great deal!Barkau's will be high on my recommendation list to everyone who says they are looking for a new/used vehicle. Exceptional Service....This dealership is both professional and quaint. Other dealerships that we had shopped were very institutional. We would recommend J.H Barkau and Sons to all! This was a fairly easy transaction for the employees. I had researched on-line and knew what I was looking for but even so they did everything to make my visit a pleasant one and give me what I wanted. Even after I had purchased the vehicle and got back from a short trip, I phoned Bob and told him of a few minor details (a brake light out, some lights burnt out on the dash and a plastic cowling that was loose) he took care of those problems in a timely fashion. Everything was explained to us, from the loan interest rate, down to the extended warranty, in a good fashion.

Tim was an amazing salesman. He helped us find my family and I's dream vehicle. Tim put it best when he said "you have outgrown your old vehicle and let me see what I can do to put you in a new one." Very descriptive and knowledgable about the vehicle we chose and did NOT PUSH the sale. To my husband and I that is important. We have been to many dealerships and none of them even came close to this one what-so-ever!!!! It was well worth the three hour drive and needless to say they all did a great job!! Even dealing with my 19 month olds screaming. Thank-you J H Barkau and Sons for making this an easy and pleasant transaction!!

I was impressed with Tim in helping my 16 year old daughter understand the features of the 2008 Chevy Cobalt (her first car!) He also showed her how OnStar worked and also set up the account. He was very patient with her. Kevin was very helpful with financing and the extended warranty. I felt we got a great buy. I would definitely recommend this dealership.

Yes, I would recommend them. I appreciate the selection Barkau offers it's customers and Nils was very patient with me as I am not fast at making a decision when buying a car. I think the price was fair although less is always better:) I have purchased cars there before and they have been really good about correcting issues discovered after the sale. My last car (2004 Buick Lesabre) had a heated seat that did not work and they found a used replacement and installed it without charge. I am very happy with my recently purchased Lucerne but noticed a noise in the heater/defrost motor. I called Nils and he said to get it in an dlet them have a look, which I will do as soon as my schedule allows.Thanks for a good car buying experience!

The only thing we noticed was the tires had flat spots. Otherwise the car was in excellent shape. Both men were very willing to work with us, and very friendly and it was a very good experience.

Nils, Is great to work with we bought our last car with him and it last 12 1/2 years it was a great car. We went with him again as he is honest and low pressure. He is helpful and we trust him. My parents had told me about this dealership when they were buy their vehical from the company, so I went on their website and went looking for cars in my price range. I found a car that I really liked and talked my father into coming with me to look at the car. I arrived at the dealership and right away was welcomed by Tim. He showed us the car and gave us some information about it and my father and I went on a test drive. I came back loving the car and we started the paperwork. Tim was very helpful throughout the entire process and made my car buy experience great. I couldn't have picked a better dealership.

The process was quick and much easier than expected. Tim was very knowledgable about the vehicles. It would have been nice to disclose that the 4x4 transfer case had a crack (discovered a week and a half later). I got great value for my trade in. Overall a pleasant experience.

My husband and I bought a vehicle in December of 2011. It was my 4th vehicle from Barkau's. My husband like it so well we found it's "twin" on their web-site and came to purchase it as well for him. We test drove, filled out paper work and were done in a little over a hour. The kids kept entertained with coloring and toys. It was a great experience overall and I recommend Barkau's every chance I can.

I would say that I had a pretty good experience there. Tim seemed to really listen to what I was looking for in a vehicle. I think it is a plus when a dealer takes the time to fix most of the issues a vehicle has when it gets traded in. I have been to dealers before who seemed to not care about the condition of their used autos. I am sure that I would return when I decide to purchase another vehicle in the future.

Purchased a used vehicle that had been "gone over" and was represented as having no problems. On the test drive, the tire pressure light kept coming on, so I mentioned it to the salesperson. Someone came out and "took care of it", telling me I just had a slightly low tire. The light has been flashing ever since, but not a problem compared to the AC. Two weeks after purchasing the vehicle, I discovered the air conditioner was blowing hot air. I was told there was probably a leak and to go down to the service center where they would look at it right away. They said they were too busy and made an appointment for me to come back a week later and get a free loaner car. When I came back, they wouldn't let me take the loaner car because I don't carry full coverage on my own vehicle. They didn't mention it beforehand, so they said I'd have to go home and make another appointment and find my own ride. I can't miss any more work, and I have a car with no AC for the summer. I will never purchase a vehicle from JH Barkau again.

Was looking for a small pick up truck to just have around to get stuff with. Not wanting new or anything that would require lots of additional costs in full coverage insurance or a big monthly payment. I decided to check online and found JH Barkau. I was glade I made the trip because they had plenty of reasonable priced used trucks which I was amazed at how well they had been prepared for resale. The interiors were very clean and they had been inspected. No they were not always in perfect shape. But the prices were good. I found a decent pickup and even though I had to do some minor fixes like a tune up and new battery. I did not find my purchase to be a disappointment by any means. I would certainly recommend JH Barkau to anyone needing a decent used vehicle.

My wife and I arived at the Cedarville location and were greeted by Jim. We told him what vehicles we were looking for and acomidated our requests with what was on the Cedarville lot as well as taking us to the Freeport lot to see and drive other vehicles, We decided on a vehicle went back to Cedarville store, completed the paperwork and were on our way with our vehicle. At no point was there any pressure to buy, just friendly people there to help. I would recommend this company because from the moment we walked in the door everyone we came into contact with was very nice. Kevin was able to answer all of our questions and was very educated on the different vehicles. We didn't really know what we were looking for and we were able to tell him our requirements for a vehicle and Kevin was able to narrow down the right vehicle for us. i found my van listed on internet. testdrove at dealership and decided to purchase. tim and i reached an agreeable deal and i purchased the car. after i picked it up i had some trouble which required service. two days later, the car was in the shop being repaired and i was provided a loaner. my whole experience with barkau was very pleasant thanks to tim and the repair dept staff. Very accomodating to our specific situation. Due to our finances we asked if the car we were interested in purchasing could be held for a period of time. They were willing to do so. They went out of their way to do all they could so we could purchase the car for our son. We have been dealing with Nils for approx. 15 yrs. We have always been happy with how well he takes care of us. We have referred others to him over the years. Thanks for the great job!

Where to begin... First I called the dealership inquiring about a pre-approval. The sales man I talked to was very friendly on the phone, but I was told there was nothing they could do unless I put 2000 down. Next my Girlfriend called to see if she could get pre-approved. We were told that she was. We were even told what our monthy payments were. We set up an appointment to come and look at the car. We had to drive 2 hours to get to the dealership. When we arrived we were informed that they had raised the price of the vehicle by $1000 from the price we had discussed. After about 20 minutes of complaining to the dealer he told us he got the price reduced back to the price we had discussed, as if he did us some large favor. After test driving car we did like the car, and even though felt like they weren't the best or most honest of car dealers we said we would like to purchase the vehicle, only to find out that we hadn't been pre-approved. He said the process would take 15 minutes and we would be good to go, even though we were told we were pre-approved. After about 30 minutes of waiting we were told that they couldn't get us a loan without a co-signer. I would strongly recommend that you look elsewhere for a vehicle, as this seems to be a very shady car dealership.
