I went into this dealer about a month ago looking to purchase a vehicle. Upon looking it over, I noticed the tires were ALL dry-rotted. After explaining the issue to the Sales Manager, he said he will try to speak with the service department about changing 3 of the 4 tires, but couldn't make any promises. Also, I had to purchase the car before he could even put his word in. What? I have to purchase a vehicle that is unsafe to drive, with less than half a promise to fix it? Besides, even if I didn't purchase the vehicle, the tires should be replaced because its future owner would want it to be safe as well, right? Nope. The manager insisted I purchase the car first. I walked out. I wrote an email to corporate explaining the situation and nobody cared to contact me about the issue. Good. It's better that I didn't purchase the car anyways. Went to Rick Case where they treated me like a royalty.

Warning! Don't buy here!

Bought a 2010 VW Jetta with 35,000 miles in June 2014. Clean looked good. Didn't buy extended warranty. Within 30 days the ABS and Traction lights came on and the original battery went dead. I spent $1,000 on oil change (full synthetic), new battery, wiper blades and other maintenance. Was told by VW South that the ABS computer would cost $1,800! Now at 41,500 and have to replace the spark plugs and fuel filter! another $300 to $400 dollars! CARMAX apparently does NOT do any inspection except to detail the car and make sure it has good tires! The car was over priced at $14,000. Trade-in now valued at $8,000! DON'T BUY HERE!

Without a doubt, the worst transaction I have ever made.

They sold me a faulty car with the premise that it was still under factory warranty. I specifacally asked both my sales representative and the finance manager to confirm the car was in fact under warranty. After 3 weeks with my car the service engine soon light, and well as, the Break light came on. That Sunday the service department was closed, so I took my car to a BMW dealer because I was initally told the car was under factory warranty. BMW examined my car and estimated a total of $2000 worth of repairs because, lo and behold, the car had been out of warranty for over 4 months. I then attempted to schedule an appointment with Carmax within the "30-day guarantee" and they weren't able to accommodate me. I sent 2 emails, and called multiple times speaking to several "Managers" who would not assist in getting me an appointment or recognizing the lie that my salesman Armando told me. Brake light, service engine soon light, transmission issues, you name it my car has it! NOT A SINGLE PERSON has been able to return my calls. I have spoken to various "Managers" with the promise of a call back and NOONE has done so. I contacted Carmax on December 21st, 4 days before my 30-days was up (thats when my car began showing signs of damage). Today is now January 19th, and yet no one is able to assist me. I have visited the store twice and both times the front desk has assured me that the manager would contact me, again, a lie.

Purchased a 07 BMW X5 and trade in a 05 BMW X5. The 2007 was purchased that same day for the total amount they gave me. They took my trade ($16000) plus a check for the remaining balance (17350). signed off all paperwork, took the car home, next day the Service light started to light up, front break pads started to squeek, Idrive computer joystick did not work..driver seat steaches were comming out so I called and made a service appointment for all this issues. It took a week to resolve all issues and everything was good..!! last week, a month after the purchase, I recieved a call from the Bussiness office telling me that I owe Carmax $1200. Why? becasue they made a mistake at the time of purchase ading and substracting all my paperwork, so they gave an amount to write the check for, they even wrote the amount on the check for me. Well, now they want those extra $1200 becasue their mistake. Contacted corporate in VA, and they contacted the store here in Miami, then I recieved a call from Miami Carmax Bussines Office telling me that because it was their mistake they will deduct $400 and I have to pay $800 still. This is not how bussiness should be... I have a Signed Purchase agreement signed by them with a total amount of purchase paid off and now they want to say that the amount should be more. Ridiculos...!!! Is this how CARMAX do bussiness?

I traded in a 2010 Toyota Highlander on 12/31/10 for a 2007 Ford Explorer. I had to return this within 5 days because the check engine and several other lights in the vehicle came on. I exchanged this for another 2007 Ford Explorer and 3 weeks after the check engine and engine oil change light was on after they claimed they changed it when we bought the vehicle. We brought it in for an oil change and 'check-up" and they said all was well and when we picked up the vehicle it was still driving sluggish and needed further repairs. We then requested to return the vehicle as it was obviously not in the condition where it should have been sold and were given the run around for 2 weeks and told nothing only to be told we would need to pay $2000 in negative equity because we had the vehicle for 42 days. Ridiculous experience, very poor quality vehicles, THEY DO NOT CHECK THE VEHICLE CONDITION AS THEY CLAIM and there were several other people in there screaming with me regarding similar issues with vehicles they had just purchased. In the end I will NEVER purchase another vehicle from them again and advise anyone else who wants a quality vehicle not to as well.

I bought a used 2007 BMW X5 3.0 from the Miami Carmax on 4/29/09. It had 17,000 miles. They had to transfer the car from Virginia for $349. The transfer took only 4 days to complete. The car was in almost new condition. No scratches, dents, etc. It had two extra options which were not listed on their website. The only part missing was the rear cargo compartment cover. They promised to replace it free of charge. After a week of waiting, they told me that none were available in the United States and BMW had to order the part from Germany. I called a BMW dealer and was told that there were 5 available and they could have it in 2 days. After speaking to Jason Hardy (service manager at the Miami Carmax), I was told to buy the part and send them a fax with the invoice for a refund (total cost $640). After several calls and about 2 weeks, I received a check directly from Carmaxs corporate office. At the same time, I traded-in my 2002 BMW X5 3.0 for $9,000. That car had some dings and 91,000 miles. I probably could have gotten an extra $1,000 - $1,500 more if I sold it myself but decided that with tax savings the extra amount I would get would not be worth the time I would need to spend trying to sell it myself. Not to mention, possibility of getting scammed. Overall, Im very satisfied. II saved a lot of time by shopping and comparing vehicles online. They have a large inventory and I was able to set up email alerts to let me know if a particular car with options I want becomes available. Sales staff was not as experienced as your usual used car dealer but also less pushy. They get paid much less per car sold. The no-haggle price was decent. I also bought an extended warranty for 75,000 miles and 6 years for $1,700 which can be used at Carmax or any BMW dealer. I already drove more than 2,000 miles with no problems besides a nail in one of the run flat tires which was fixed for $25.

I took my 2001 Mercedes to the Boynton Carmax dealership for an appraisal. Although I was treated politely, the appraiser basically lowballed my car saying that the engine oil indicated sludging--a frequent finding in German and Japanese cars. He added that this sludge was highly associated with total engine failure at an indeterminate future time. I then took the car (which ran perfectly) to the Mercedes dealer for evaluation. They exchanged the oil (which was clean and free of sludge) and pulled the valve covers to inspect for sludge (which was absent). In the end I don't know whether the kind folks at Carmax were trying to bamboozle me or are just incompetent...but in either case just to set the record straight was not cheap.

I had a mixed experience with Car Max. The stuff they do right is very, very right. The stuff they mess up, they really mess up!

Good Stuff:
I did my research on my trade in before I went. They were a little lower than my research, but not appreciably. I have four kids, there were probably more scratches than I want to admit to. It was only about $200 lower than I expected. Not bad.

The car was a surprise for my husband. I went in on Monday. His birthday was on Thursday. I found a great car in great condition. Knowing I did not want to take the risk of waiting until Thursday to buy it, we actually completed the sale Monday night and they loaned me my car for the week at no charge. I could not believe they did that!

Pitch about warrenty- every car place does this. Why is everyone so surprised that Car Max does? He told me about the two options, I declined them both, we went on. The whole thing was about 10 seconds.

Bad things
I asked my salesperson about what gets checked in the engine. He didn't know, referred me to the brochure.

When I turned in the title, they forgot to have me sign it. I had to go back out there to sign the title over to them.

I had an appointment to pick up my car. They knew when it should have been ready. I waited an hour, then they brought out the wrong car. My car was still being worked on, was ready about 10 minutes later.

They didn't put the temp tags on the car

They left the key box in the car, then were upset when I told them I still had it.

There were three things missed when I picked up my car - the title, the temp tags, and the key box. She asked if I was in a hurry when I picked it up, like it was my fault that these were missed. I said no, they just handed me my keys and said "Here you go." I assumed that meant we were done.

All in all, car buying is never fun. You always need to be aware of what's happening during a major purchase. This is the second car I have bought from CarMax and have been as pleased as you can be while buying a car.

I was foolish enough to walk into CARMAX looking for a car. Allow me to tell you about the environment in their "superstore". CARMAX is a sub-division of Circuit City Corp. I have purchased many items from Circuit City and ASSumed buying from CARMAX would be o.k. Well you know what they say about people the ASSume things....
They have this huge store the looks very impressive.

The cars themselves are all in absolute perfect exterior condition, no dents, dings, scratches, or otherwise visible imperfections. (clue #1) The interiors were probably most impressive and ook like they have never been driven, they are all super-clean They have unusually low mileage on all their cars. How could a perfectly good car have 15,000 to 25,000 miles BELOW the national driving average? Were the cars just not used? Or were they discarded early because of problems? OR, can CARMAX offer cheap prices because they purchase unwanted cars for almost nothing make them look pretty and resell them to the public?

Additionally, the salespeople practically beg you to buy the extended warranty plan. Throughout the entire sales process they keep reminding you to take the MaxCare warranty. Why are they so determined? Aren't there cars "inspected" and completely "restored"? Do they know something we don't? (clue #3)

They claim to perform a 101 point check on the car and replace everything that they find wrong. That's fine however, do you think you would notice if the turn signals weren't working? I think that's pretty obvious. Their so-called expert mechanics failed to notice a blown fuse on a car they intend to sell (that should have been my cue to "get the h*ll out of dodge".)

CARMAX is completely uncaring and unresponsive to your concerns or cries for help. A car is a major financial purchase and anything that goes wrong with that affects your (financial) future. All CARMAX is concerned with is your money. (which after you finance, they HAVE!) So they could care less how you feel AFTER the sale. Darn shame isn't it??

To follow is a listing of all the problems I have had with my car.

Problems:

1. Radiator hose fell off.
2. Brakes started to fail.
3. Radiator hose fell off again.
4. Drivers seat front/rear adjuster broke off.
5. Tilt steering lock broke.
6. Brakes failed completely (resulted in accident).
7. Drivers window became stuck down.
8. Car began leaking on front passenger side during rain.
9. Passengers window became stuck down.
10. Rear passenger's windows became stuck down.
11. Brakes failed completely again. (resulting in second accident)
12. Passenger side door lock broke. (unable to open passenger side door from outside)
13. Rear right dual-exhaust became unhinged.
14. Upper radiator hose split.
15. Brakes became severely worn within 7K miles.
16. 30 days later brakes became severely worn again in 5K miles.
17. Drivers side front window becomes stuck down again.
18. Oil gasket failure below intake manifold.
19. Transmission gasket failure.
20. Alternator completely dead.
21. Battery dead as a result of the faulty alternator.
22. Electronics failures as a result of the previous two and damaged fuses.

The final straw was when I traded it in, the dealer lowered my trade-in because of crash damage!! YES CRASH!! Carmax's policy is that they will NEVER sell you a damaged car. Uh-huh.
