Old, Cheap Car- but it gets me from A to B

It is what it is- an old, cheap, low-power car. My '06 Taurus has only 75,000 miles on it but has had a lot of repairs for being barely driven before 2014. I've had to replace the battery cables, alternator, brakes and have had several issues with the battery and the car randomly not starting. It doesn't do very well in the snow, but I haven't died yet so it holds up enough. The interior panels do fall off, and the controls/electrics are very, very simplistic and old-fashioned. This car is pretty low-power and struggles to accelerate, don't expect a lot of power from it. All in all, it's a cheap car and it gets me places. Doesn't feel the safest to drive, I don't know if that's because of more problems not diagnosed yet or if it's just the fact it's a pretty cheap car. For the amount of money I have dumped into this car, the most I can get for it is $1,300. Just another old, cheaply made car with problems.

Great car

I bought my 2006 Taurus in 2010 in Oklahoma city with 63,000 miles on it. I had no records to tell me how the previous driver drove it. the 1st thing I did was change the oil and tranny fluid and replace the filters. I now have 175,000 miles on it and except for the battery, oil changes, tires and brakes i have made no repairs to the car. my Taurus has gone back and forth from NY to Oklahoma 4 times and to Oklahoma, L.A. and back to NY. it is the 6th Taurus I have owned and the previous one a 2000 Taurus had 517,000 miles on it when the salt of NY killed it in 2010. that Taurus had 3 sets of struts replaced, multiple tie rods, ball joints, bearings replaced and 3 gas tanks. if not for the salt i would still be driving it.

My son got this as his first car in September 2015. Single middle-aged female owned since it was new. In those 10 years, she put about 70,000 miles on it. The car came with records, among them touting a semi-recent (3 years prior) exhaust overhaul and shortly thereafter (1½ years prior), a new alternator. Oil changes done on time with a major mechanic in the area. If anything seemed like if was going, she had it replaced immediately. It was a good deal on a not-terribly-old car with low mileage. The car was fine until February 2016, when it attempted to self destruct. In one month's time I had to have it towed two hours from home (at a cost of $500) and then replace the intake manifold, a catalytic converter and the alternator. This was all within a 50 mile period. No joke. The car was at the mechanic's for 3 weeks. The alternator died 2 towns away, so it limped to a garage in that area, who had it for another 3 days. In 3 weeks, I invested nearly $2000 into this car, a car that had only 85,000 miles on it and had a full set of records. I was in shock and meager savings account depleted rapidly. Just getting into the car feels like going back to the 1990s. The instrumentation seems so antiquated. The interior feels shoddy. My wife drives a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica -- it's the same year. It feels like it's a full decade ahead in terms of updates. Ford really let this brand die hard. It wasn't competitive with anything released that year. There's no way. It's a full size car that feels incredibly cheap. The interior door panels must have been attached with silly putty, because the panels are literally falling apart -- even on the passenger side, which had seen very little use in it's first decade. But, the car was a good price and I don't care if my kid gets a "Mercedes-feel" out of his first car. But it's surprising that what had once been the top car in America (I actually had a 1993 Taurus when my son was born in 1997), got left so far behind. There's not much difference between that 1993 and the 2006. It drives the same, like it has the same 3.0 engine (and it probably does), the interior feels very familiar. It's just a few body panels got swapped out. Talk about letting your iconic brand go stale. Right now, the car has been stable since the issues last month. However, it has thrown a light on the dash for the airbag. I don't even want to get into that, so we're taking care of it later when the car needs to be inspected and the kid can save a little more money from his after-school gig at a pizzeria. Plus, he's got $1400 to pay me back first (he had $600 available initially).

I couldn't be happier.

I needed a work car in a hurry after the previous one was totalled due to a deer collision. I've had this little gem for over 2 years now and I have to say it's the best work car I've ever had. Recently I decided to make a lifetime commitment to it, so replaced all 4 struts, plugs, wires, coil packs, front brakes and rotors. It needed a new A/C compressor and I gave it 4 Michelin defender tires. This baby rides like a brand new car! The mechanic told me "you realize you're putting 90,000 mile tires on this thing". I said yep, she's only got 105,000 miles on her and I'm in it 'till death do us part. That's how confident I am in this vehicle. I can see why Ford sold millions of these!

This car has been nothing but a pile or crap. Bought it from a dealer with 49000 miles. Have had to replace the master cylinder for the breaks (3 mo. after owning it), transmission (5 mo after owning it), altnator (4 Mo after owing it). Was previously a business owned car should have been decent. Theres contantly something wrong with it and it leaves me stranded. The horsepower is crap compared to the 4 cylinder car I had previous. No Power! Don't hold its retail value. The only thing good about it was the price but, I need a vehical fast as my other was totaled in an accident. Never again!

'06 was a good year for the Taurus. Bought mine with 24K four years ago from a Dealership. I am at 118K now. It has received all the scheduled Maintenance services, including synthetic oil and Motorcraft filters. Typical brake/fluids/tire replacement. Just put on a new set of tires with alignment and had the AC serviced. The car performs as good as the day I bought it. The ride is still comfortable and the handling is tight and responsive. Great in the snow. No leaks of any kind that I know of. Edmunds has the TMV at $7,697.00, which I would agree with. It has been a very reliable car that has held its value. I plan on driving it to at least 150K. An excellent production year for Ford.

My Taurus has been pretty reliable, although when it rains hard or is going through an auto car wash it gets water in the front passenger foot-well, through the rear passenger side seat belt winder in the back window, and also in the trunk. This make it awfully difficult to store valuables anywhere in the car without worry of water damage!! I would love to hear if anyone has remedies for this aside from taking it to a body shop, I'm a do it yourself-er.

I have been driving the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable since 1989, company cars, I used to make fun of them unitl I had a BMW, the Taurus is bulletproof. Corporate America buys these cars because they are safe, low insurance rates, ample parts, and they are cheap to own. The only weak point on the car is the transmission. Granted company cars only have pedal to the floor, brake to the floor, but at 65k the transmissions will fail. I just bought a 2006 with 28k for personal use and asked the ford dealer for an extended warranty only the cover the tranny. My gas mileage averages about 22 city and 28-32 hwy, for a car of this size its amazing. My sons Scion is not much better. Great Car!

I was given this car as a company car brand new, I drove it for 4 1/2 years and put 214,000 miles on it and ALL we had to do was brakes and 2 tie rod ends. The oil was changed every 3 to 4K miles. After my company retired this car, I was able to purchase it for my 16 year old daughter. After taking it to the shop to have it checked out, They told me that this car was a GREAT first car for my daughter and that everything was in really good shape!!!! the mechanic refered to this car as BULLET PROOF!!!

Wow, a taurus did that?

This is the first Ford I have ever bought. Truth be told, the only reason why I bought it was I got a good deal. I have it up to 165,000 miles now, and I have only replaced the alternator, tires, all brakes, and the radiator. Previous owner must of had a wreck, the radiator was damaged from an unknown accident. I don't count that against the Taurus though. I average 30-32 MPG! I drive 150 miles round trip everyday, all highway miles. It rides smooth with newer tires, and is somewhat comfortable. All in all, I think its an ugly car with a bland interior, but for 6500 bucks, I have driven the car 100,000 miles. I find that much more sexy than a loaded sports car.

I just purchased my second 2006 Ford Taurus - never had any problems with the first as long as oil was changed every 3000 miles. Comfortable, roomy, easy to handle, V6 handles well, lots of things that work for a middle-aged woman who drives a lot. No complaints! Plenty of room for passengers, suitcases, and animal carriers.

New tires, new battery (as needed) and reg 3000 mile oil changes (Synthetic oil only). Nothing else! This is a workhorse of a car! Love our Taurus!

I bought this to use for a highway car, i travel a lot for business and personally as well. Mine is the base model, got it for under $8k and I have to say, nothing else out there could come close to fitting the bill for what I was after. People complain about the road noise, but I believe this is primarily due to the OEM Continentals. What junk. A set of Michelin Destinys turned it into a new vehicle. Barely drivable in rain or snow before they were on there, it's a new vehichle now. One of the best I've ever driven in the winter, and I drive a lot of miles.

I purchased my Taurus in March of 2009. It was a high mileage car (84,000). This little trooper is awesome!! I've taken several long distance drives (1000 roundtrip) and the gas mileage keeps getting better and better (25.5mpg) The only issue I have with it is when I bought it, the 6-CD changer only was able to play 1 disc. It will not advance. If that's my only issue with this little gem, I have no complaints!!

We absolutely love our Taurus! We looked at other makes/models and found the Taurus to be a great value for the size and comfort of the car. We recently took a trip and received almost 26 mpg for mixed hwy/city driving. My husband does the maintenance on the car and we have had no problems with it whatsoever. I travel 60 miles a day for work--so, I need a reliable car. I recommend this car to anyone--it's roomy for family travels, too.

Bought the car used w/ 26,000 miles on it. I am very disappointed in the ride (everything shakes and rattles when hitting even small bumps). The road noise is unbearable-esp. wind noise, despite dealer attempts at fixing it. Poor attention to body part alignment. Pasenger floorboard gets wet when it rains-can't seem to locate site of moisture entry. Compared with my 2000 Impala, which has 121,000+ miles on it, the Taurus is a piece of junk. I am not anti Ford, having had several good ones in the past, with one of our favorites being an'86 Sable. Too bad Ford just let the Taurus go downhill. The Impala is a much better buy-great ride, quiet and great milage.

I bought my 2006 Taurus SE as a 7- month old, used fleet vehicle with 33,000 miles on it. It was a great deal at just $10,000. Cheaper to own and operate that a new or used Toyota or Honda. Mine has ABS brakes, traction control, power driver seat, side air bags, and split folding rear seats. Uninspiring and boring to drive, but a decent, comfortable family car with a massive trunk. Factory radio/CD player has way too many buttons and is confusing to operate. My only complaint is that even after driving my Taurus for 18 months, I'm still unable to judge just exactly where the front and rear of the vehicle are positioned when parking it. Plus, it takes a huge circle to make a U-turn.

Bought this car because so many people raved about Tauruses. I was unimpressed with features in the SE, tape deck! Why bother? The rear seat doesn't fold down for extra trunk space. Gas mileage was only around 19 mpg in winter, 23 in summer. Sound shielding made listening to radio pointless at highway speeds. I thought pickup and power were great, but wasn't impressed at the handling, steering just not tight enough. I don't think Ford is offering enough quality for the price.

The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of power but it serves its purpuse. The Taurus is a good car for the money and very safe. I have seen a few in crashes with SUVs and the driver of the Taurus walked away.

I bought this car as a vehicle to drive to work with pretty good MPG. I have had this car for a year now and no regrets. Avg. 23 mpg. Had been driving a Dodge 4x4 and the MPG was 12 -14 so I was looking for something more economical but didn't want to be stuck in a subcompact. The Taurus is a fine car in all respects, though a little dated and not a lot of acceleration it still is much smoother and more fun to drive than a 4 cylinder. This car is comfortable and well made. It is large enough for a family and easy to drive. Many of the newer models although very stylish are short on headroom and have poor visability. The Taurus has plenty of space. At about 10 grand the value becomes obvious.

I was very impressed with my purchase. The fuel economy is favorable if you still like to have a little spunk in your drive. This car handles better than my SUV in the winter, I know a couple people that have Taurus’s and they are pleased also. I was not too fond of the SE but with the SEL I have leather, sunroof, CD changer, MACH sound system, ABS and a couple more features that are rather favorable. If you are adjusting from a gas-guzzler to a more practical car I think this is one for you.

Good, reliable transportation. Roomy seats, rides smooth, and with only 10,000 miles at the time of purchase, will probably last me a good while. Killer AC! Factory stereo system is crap, but that's okay. I'm not a teenager anymore that's trying to make the entire world listen to my music! It serves its purpose. Fog lights would be nice. Rear defroster works, but very slowly. Came with floor mats, and cup holders in the front and back of the vehicle! And Ford Taurus is second to none in its safety rating! Overall, I am quite pleased with my purchase.

This car was from a rental fleet, so it came with some mileage and wear on the seats. The only real wear problem we had with the car was the cloth seats. It was a very peppy engine, nice styling (we had the rear spoiler and alloy wheels), and sound, controls...all good. The biggest problem with the handling was U- turns. The turning radius ridiculous for that size car. I say "was" about this car because my wife totalled it this week. She went to sleep on the interstate and smashed the passanger side front into a hillside. The rearend swung around and smashed on the driver side. The passenger compartment survived almost without damage. Impressive. She walked away almost unhurt!

My 2006 Ford Taurus SE has road noise that is almost unbearable even with the windows up and the radio loud. It does not handle well and often hesitates when taking off from a stopped position. Today, I found that on the passenger side, it leaked terribly. My floorboard had about 1/2 inch of water in it and I have no idea how that is happening. The car is too large for my needs. It does average 25 mpg though. This is the only Ford I've ever owned. I look forward to trading for a GM product or possibly a Honda, Nissan or Toyota.

Why did Ford decide to cut this model out? I have driven Tauruses in the past and knew what a good car they were. Had to get a car and this was our choice. Good, dependable family car. Nothing more, nothing less. I actually like the styling as opposed to the new Taurus. I have driven the new Taurus and prefer this model as well, except the motor. Very pleased with out choice.

My 2001 Taurus SE was a fine car in all respects. The 2006 I purchased appears to have been a car in which it was "thrown together" The body parts (quarter panels, doors, hood) do not match leaving gaps and mis-aligned body parts. The interior is nothing more than cheap inferior materials. My 2001 displayed great quality and care when assembled. The 2006 has none of this. The fuel economy is very good, handling and general reliablity is supreb. And it is a fun car to drive just as long as I ingnore the substandard construction. Still a good value for the money.

Excellent full-sized sedan for the money! We bought a 2006 SEL with all the available options leather, sun roof, alloy wheels, ABS, etc. The car is very roomy and has very comfortable leather seats. My friends commented on how smooth the ride is! Acceleration and power are good, not top of the line, but more than adequate for most drivers. I've been averaging 25mpg with a mix of highway and city driving. One recent long highway trip averaged 31 mpg, very nice! Folks, you own it to yourself to check this vehicle out. Great news that Ford is keeping the Taurus name!

Pretty good car for under $15,000

This vehicle is good on gas and has a pretty good acceleration although it the engine can get a bit noisy. I do a lot of highway driving and I can't complain.

Average city highway mileage: 25.0 18,500 miles and will need to take into the repair shop for the wheels shaking at 45mph and above. Some pulling to the right. If you're 6'3 like myself, its hard to see the gauges. CD player only takes 1 cd at a time and for the price you pay they could give you the better radio. Seats are powered and go back and forth but no lumbar power. Add 6 way seat.

Reliable and good value for the money

This car was NOT my first choice but I have been pleasantly surprised with the overall experience. While not the sexiest or most stylish of vehicles, it is a solid performer. The ride is smooth and comfortable, the engine is quiet and the interior cabin and its parts all seem pretty solid. Gas mileage has been very good. For the money, a used one of these with low mileage is the way to go if you are looking to save some money while still being able to drive a decent size car that has some "bells and whistles" (i.e. leather, moonroof). My only complaint is with trying to park because it is hard to judge where the nose of the vehicle is when pulling in a parking space.

Great Value

Ok, so this isn't the most exciting vehicle in the world. Still, it does just about everything well. Enough power, Comfy seats, decent handling, good controls. Who would have thought you could get a car with 16,000 miles on it with leather for 12 grand? Ford - I'm very impressed with how well this car does most things. 2 beefs - the stereo blows (bass anyone?) and how about ABS brakes?

Solid car, good buy

Easy on the eyes, meaningful amenities without all the extra toys that go bad on up-scale vehicles. Plain, solid performer with comfortable seating, good heat/air and reasonable sound. Quiet as a cat.

Great looking aerodynamic auto. Can't remember another auto I've owned that was as comfortable as this one. Whenever I see another Taurus on the road or parked, it's just a great looking car. Ford may put out others but it won't be one as drivable, good looking and as one other reviewer put it 'takes the curves well'. I've upgraded mine to make it iPod ready and the music sounds great.

Take that! Foreign automakers.

Pound for pound & dollar for dollar one of the best purchases one could make for under $15,000. Excellent for highway travel and not too bad around town for mpg. Very comfortable & quiet, similar to older Lincolns. I added a trunk disk changer and new mats via Ford. A/C renders ice and heat cooks steaks. Wish I had bought it in teal instead of maroon. I feel like a fleet car escapee. Will buy as long as are available for a second car.

Great Car!

Good handling car. Smooth driving on the highways. Great on long road trips too! Leather seats are very comfortable. Bought mine used with 6,000 miles on it and I just love the car. This is the second Taurus that I've owned over the years. A very reliable automobile. Nice family car with lots of room inside. Saved $10,000 compared to the cost of a new Toyota Camry.

I looked a few cars and few equaled the price to value that this car had. Sure it doesn't hold the value of a Camry or a Accord, but then again, if you keep your cars for 150,000 miles, who cares. This car and the one I bought before it (97) are great cars. I put 145,000 miles on my old Taurus and no problems. Great price too.

The only thing I wish I could have had on my Taurus would be the keyless entry we have on our Mercury. Once in a while people get lucky; we have two great cars and I like the design of the Taurus from every angle. I have a friend who has a Toyota and I pointed out to him the building differences -- doors that have hinges strong enough to close vaults and the feel of strength and quality in the interior. He agrees with me and says his next car will be a Ford. Incidentally -this is my fifth Ford. The only thing that was and is disappointing was the paint on the windows around the doors; it's deteriorated.
