This is the second Trooper I've purchased on the used market, after simultaneously owning a '99 Trooper and a '99 4Runner. The Trooper is so much better than the 4Runner it wasn't close. The 4Runner cost like twice the amount on the used market, had way less features for the money, less space, less power, lower interior build quality, more delicate exterior paint that loses its gloss, I went ahead and sold the 4Runner and pocketed the cash. IMO the Trooper also has more style and is more comfortable. The build quality of the interior, the chassis, this is a really strong truck! Take an Explorer of the same year and it's obvious the Trooper stood the test of time! Superbly designed.

12 Years and running strong. Till death.

We have had our Trooper since it was new back in 1998. It is a true trooper. People cannot believe it is a 1998. It looks better than some of the newer cars. I take it everywhere. Just recently the Catalytic Converters went out so I replaced them and the next bothersome thing is the timing belts that need to be replaced every 90,000 miles or so but other than that this car has been reliable and very versatile. I would never want another car. We are taking this to the grave with us.

I really enjoy driving this vehicle. It's very comfortable and spacious with lots of room in the back for pretty much anything. It's also fun to drive and has great pickup. And it's great in snowy or muddy conditions. My only real complaints are its low mpg rating and I've been having a strange problem with the front tires when backing out of parking spaces, and no one can figure out why it's doing this. Also the sound system isn't so great. But otherwise, it's a great car and you can get a real bargain on it. So if you can afford the gas, I highly recommend this vehicle.

I have owned about 4 suvs and this was by far my very favorite! I am very hard on cars and this one took every thing I had and kept on going! I ran it out of gas,oil and never got a tune up and it still ran like a champ. I am very sad to have to get rid of it but with gas prices out of control I have no choice. I will miss this car!

This '98 model is my second Trooper (brand new purchase). My first was an '86 that is languishing in my garage waiting to be restored after 180,000 miles. The '98 is 10 years old now and still feels like a pretty new vehicle. My drives to work are short so mileage is relatively low. But the vehicle is extremely competent and reliable. I used to feel the ride was a bit soft but put stiffer shocks in and improved things. My only repair of significance (under warranty) was the vacuum control modue for the 4-wheel drive mechanism. I also replaced the intake gasket for $65 (like others). There is very little to improve an I am sad that GM and Isuzu ultimately killed off the truck .

It drives great and it does have plenty of room for grocery. It has a problem with the window track on driver side. It saves on gas.

If you're going to go with an SUV the Trooper is the way to go. I've only had one minor problem, the intake manifold gasket, that cost all of $200 to fix and ever since then (also up until then) it's been really reliable. I could start writing about how much I love driving in the snow with it. But that's a whole different review.

Purchased the Trooper to drive back and forth in the snow belt between Erie, PA and Cleveland back in '98. The 4WD on the fly saved me many times on ice/snow covered I-90. Now in Texas, still driving well and looks good. Great quality build with 174,000+ miles. This one is a keeper but mileage is taking a hit and oil needs checking every 10 days. Love cargo space, made many trips for supplies from Lowes "Blue" and Home Depot "Orange" while finishing a basement. Like the roomy interior and durable materials.

Has been the best car I have ever owned. 118,000 miles and just replaced a starter. That's it. Taken us to the snow, the mud, the beach and never let us down. Not the greatest mileage, but the best bang for your buck. Too bad the replacement came from GM. We'd like a new one someday!

This is my first SUV. Since I bought the Trooper in March of 2005, I have only good things to say about my Trooper. The reliability is second to none. It rides well and the fuel consumption is not bad for an SUV. For the three years I have owned it, only oil changes and a set of front tires. If Isuzu still makes the Troopers in the future, I will buy another without any hesitation. However, I plan on buying another used one to add to the 1998 model I have. This speaks of the durability and the reliability of the Trooper. The cargo capacity is among the best in its class.

I bought my second Trooper in 1998, after having my first one for nearly 10 years. This SUV has been super, virtually trouble-free, comfortable, strong in snow, safe in extreme conditions, and great on the road from here to Maine and back. My black lab likes to stretch out in the back and snooze on those long trips, and he has lots of room because of the huge cargo area behind the back seat. The engine on the '98 is bigger and stronger than the '86 model, but needed to be to power the heavier vehicle. I may buy a new car for city use, but my Trooper will stay in the family, here in DC or on the coast of Maine, where this work horse thrives in snowy winters or muddy springtime. Thanks Isuzu.

Love this vehicle but the big complaint is a problem which no one has been able to solve. The front end power train seems to bind up, especially when backing out of parking spaces when the wheels are turned. Have had it looked at several times. Seems to me it would be the CV joints but I've not gotten any mechanics to concur. Other than that it's been a good vehicle and would buy another.

Loved the Trooper till the engine blew. Crank broke and came out thru the oil pan. Found out the 98 had a defect in the engine and Isuzu replaced some engines early on. But my Trooper is now 6 years old and I am outta luck. Rebuilt or used engines are expensive $3500 to $4000 and $1000 to install. This is a truck worth $6000 at trade if you are lucky.

I've had Toyota, Mazda (twice) and BMW, but found my 1998 Isuzu Trooper to be, hands down, the most reliable and FUN vehicle to date. It's great off road and makes you feel secure in mountain snow and the wilds of Mexico. The size is ideal for threading through the desert scrub and squeezing into that "compact-only" parking space, while allowing you to pile items to the roof inside. The best.

I bought new in '98. I have taken care of it like my truck I had before some scmuck hit me--loved that truck. Anyhow AC really doesn't cut it in the southwest summers--it sucks actually. It would be great for mild climates. Once the temp got over 100, roll down the windows! Also I'm losing about 2 quarts per month, and the interior carpeting is poorly installed. Window tracks are weak, and all cupholders, especially the rear seat really stinks. the magnet latch always breaks.

We bought our trooper new. Have taken great care of it. It now has 56000 miles and is burning nearly 2.75qt of oil every 3000. Company says anything under 3qt is normal and no covered under warranty. Other than that concern it has been a great vehicle.

THE TROOPER IS A GOOD SOLID VEHICLE THAT HAS PROVEN ITSELF VERY RELIABLE OVER THE LAST YEAR & A HALF. I DRIVE 100 MILES A DAY ON THE TOLLROAD. THE VEHICLE NEVER COMPLAINES. I HAVE ONLY NEEDED TO DO THE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE & A COUPLE OTHER REPAIRS WHEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE FIRST TIME WAS THE DRIVETRAIN CONTROL MODULE. THE SECOND TIME WAS THE GAS GUAGE THING IN THE GAS TANK WENT OUT. GIVING A INCORRECT FUEL READING. DRIVER WINDOW NEEDED REPAIR. 2 TIMES IT HAS NEEDED REPAIR. HANDLING IS GREAT FOR SUCH A HEAVY SUV. PARTS ARE EXPENSIVE. IF YOU CAN AFFORD THE PARTS BY ALL MEANS I WOULD RECOMMEND GETTING A TROOPER.

This car has been outstanding from the highways of Southern California in the summer to the ski slopes of Colorado without fail. The only issue I've had was a Check Engine caused by the oxygen sensor - no problems, just some build-up on the sensor that was cleaned off. I could not have a better SUV.

We wanted/needed more room for the family and found this wonderful Trooper. It was a lease vehicle and only had 36000 miles. Does great off road and on road. We take it up the mountains often. Some roads aren't that great but the Trooper performs like a dream. Fun to drive. Lots of room for cargo/passengers. We can fit three car seats across the back seat easily. We're looking at buying a third seat. After three months the alternator went out. I replaced it and the battery. Has been fine since. So far it has been easy to work on. Lots of room to work under the hood. Stock Bridgestone tires aren't that great. Already need to be replaced after 38000 miles.

We did our research and landed on the Isuzu as the best value at the time we bought it. Since then, we've had ZERO problems. It has been a delight to drive and performed well under a wide variety of circumstances including serious off-road, snow, ice, mud, dirt, freeway, and towing a U-haul across the US.

Sadly, the awesome Isuzu Trooper has been replaced by an inferior rebadged GM effort. I very much doubt that the replacement will provide the rock solid reliability I enjoyed from my Trooper - not a single problem in 70k miles and as solid as the day I bought it. The fit, finish and materials were in a class above anything else under $33K, the power train was smooth and perfectly geared to the power output of the 3.5 that debuted in '98. I only had two gripes about the vehicle; I thought the seat fabric could have been a bit thicker and the AC struggled to keep pace with an Arizona summer, though the addition of dark tints helped a lot.

Have had no repairs, but replaced factory shocks as soon as purchased, factory shocks were weak. 17.5-18 mpg driving highway, city, 70mph. did brakes, wheel bearing pack, oil change myself - very easy to maintain. excellent on snow with michelin tires, interior has kept "new" look very well.

Super sport ute. No serious problems in 5 years. It has saved my family it 2 car wrecks ...and no roll-over. Still has original brakes and lights. I wish I could say the same for my Jagaur. The engine has power, just push the power button for higher shifting. My family liked it so much my brother and sister both bought one.

Boght this SUV used with just over 30,000 miles. It was loaded with all I needed for around 12K. Amazing. Drover most other similar size trucks - Explorer, Pathfinder, 4Runner, Durango, Tahoe. This car was thousands cheaper and felt better on and off road. So far no problems at all - it survivied a Moscow winter (yes, Russia)and braved huge snowdrifts and potholes without complaint. If this car can survive in Russia - rest assured it will be just fine in the States. I plan to bring it back with me in two years when I come home. I use Mobil 1 and change fluids religiously. Great SUV.

Great, save for engine trouble (mini me?) At 65,000 miles, the engine went out. McKenna Isuzu in HB, CA was able to get us a short block for free & charged us about half (~$700) on labor. This could have cost us $4,500. While this one was just out of warranty, newer Troopers have 120,000 mile warranties, so that may have played a part. We have been a customer of this dealership for 15 years - maybe even that played a part. My first Trooper, a 1986, went 190,000 with only a water pump and exhaust manifold replaced. My wife drives it - and loves it. I use it for desert camping, skiing and long family trips. It's big on the inside and small on the outside.

I love the trooper for its size, ruggedness and desire to not conform to current bubble designs. My one very major complaint is a blown engine at 70,000 miles and the cost to replace it. Ouch! I have to believe that I was just unfortunate and this is not the norm!

This is our second Trooper. The first was a '94, basic 4 door model. The second has more options and both have performed very well on and off road. We have been from desert trails in Big Bend to 13,000' mountain trails in Colorado, and have never been disappointed. Very little maintainance. Just wish they had one with a third seat!
