Do not make a service appointment online. I made a service appointment online to have my Hyundai repaired for Saturday at 11 AM. When I arrived I was told by a less than friendly repair rep that it was "Chrysler day" and they were only working on Chryslers. So why did you confirm my appointment. The service people are so rude and spend their time walking around glaring at you when you are waiting. Do not take your car here!

I bought this car from my dad back in 2004 with 140K miles on it. It now has about 213K, and the engine is running great - it's performed almost like a Japanese car. Other than routine maintenance (oil changes, the odd tune up, new tires) the only things I've had to replace on this car were an engine mount and a rear windshield (the windshield can't be blamed on the manufacturer - some kid smashed it one night). The cosmetics of the car aren't great, but what do you expect from a car that's been kept outside for over a decade? It needs a little oil added about once every other tank. But it gets amazing gas mileage (about 29 in town and almost 40 on the highway).

A 1996 Saturn SW2 was my first car, I bought it at a cheap price with 139,000 miles on it. I put about 30,000 more miles on it in 3 years. The only major issue with the car was an oil leak that I knew had to be repaired when I bought it. Other than that, it was routine maintenance and minor repairs. When the heater coil broke, the car was pretty close to 170,000 miles and the price to fix it was nearly the price of the car itself, so I sadly had to say goodbye. Overall, the car was EXTREMELY reliable and the gas mileage was great. I drove it to and from college (over 100 miles away) with no problems. I'd buy the car again if I could. Definitely well worth what I paid!

I have a '96 SC2. It has about 145,000 miles on it and runs like it is new. The interior is a little small, especially when you try to pack people into the back seats, but for driving it is very confortable. It has great handling and hugs corners and is very fun, especially with performance mode on the transmission. It is very reliable, everything works, all I have to do is keep the oil changed. Overall, it is a great first car, gets 30mpg and is fun to drive.

I have had my 96 saturn for about the last 7 years. It was bought used by my grandparents and then sold to me when they wanted a new one. I didn't have a lot of problems with it at all in these last 7 years. Have never had any big issues until recently. Has 196,000 miles and I have a bad cylinder. Unfortunately I have to find a new car before mine really stops running. I was very pleased overall and it just seems like a fluke that I did not get more miles out of it. I am now looking at a 1999 Saturn SL2...so obsessed with the Saturn.

The Saturn 96 SC2 has been my first car and I plan to keep her until she dies. I have had her for around 8 months now and she hasn't brought me any real problems except from conditions left from the previous owners. It's a small car so it's recommended for single or a couple. She has great gas mileage and gas is pretty easy on her. I have her on 139,000 from 133,000 when I got her. One thing I've noticed is she is very fragile for the snow, but she is very agile in the spring, summer, and fall.

she just keeps going!

I love this car! I resisted buying an American car, but this baby has blown my mind. With the plastic panel sides, she still looks amazing in Vermont which has a knack for eating cars from the inside out. These cars come with ABS and Traction Control which was amazing in the snow. Now as I look for a new car I'm really wishing that i can just get another SW1 Or maybe Sw2 which has a bit more power. Can fit an adult size bike in the back without taking the front wheel off. I could stand a little more power but what can you do!I currently have 204,688 miles on it, and I bought it at 91,000 after much trepidation and many hours of research I went for it and couldn't be more pleased!

I bout my saturn sl with 121,000 miles on it last november since then i have put on 15,000 miles. It ran fine at first burning just a quart here and there which is usual, but then in about february my transmission blew. It didnt end there after i got tht replaced i kept having more nd more problems. the oil problem kept getting worse and worse ik have to buy a case of 12qts a month i just replaced my drive axel my tie rod ends nd now i have to do my ball joints. it seems it just doesnt end with this vehicle i would not recomend it for anyone like me who is on a tight student budget and can barely afford the oil and gas much less repairs

Bought this car used in 2002 with 60k miles. I kept up with routing maintenance. Repairs were consistent with normal wear and tear and never anything major. Had 185K miles on the car last week when a lady cut me off and my car was totaled and I am heart broken but my little car protected us from receiving serious injuries. It did leak oil as is common with this model because of the valve cover gasket. I still got almost 40 mpg on highway and 30 mpg city. This is the best car I ever owned in 40 years of car ownership. My little Saturn did die a noble death. I am looking for another used Saturn and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable economical auto.

I got this car because I had to. I regret it. This is the cheapest made car I have ever owned. My back windows won't stay up no matter what I do. I have them duct taped at the moment. My car shakes and rattles and no one can figure out why. I had to replace the radiator and muffler. The muffler has been replaced twice actually. It goes through oil very fast and I have to change the oil every 1,000 miles or so. I have to put coolant in it every other week or so. The one good thing about this car is it gets great gas mileage. I do not recommend this car to anyone.

Bought this car with about 160,000 miles on it for $900. Put about $1,500 into it since then (rebuilt motor due to lack of oil changes, not my fault!). This is my dad's car, but I drive it every so often. He commutes 80 miles a day, five days a week. We live in Michigan, so this car has been through it all! Absolutely FANTASTIC on gas! It handles great and accelerates pretty smoothly. 221,000 miles on it now, and plenty more to go! Starts up like brand new in 20º weather. Flip-up lights, defrost, A/C, power windows/locks still work! Highly recommend! Only cons: not too much interior room, cup holder location is annoying. Would drive to Florida and back! Who have proof that American cars last!

First of all, I never write reviews. my 96 Saturn sl2 died today. Actually coolant started spraying out from the motor. I have had this car for about ten years, besides the regular maintenance, i have changed the muffler and 2 tie rods. the car is boring and plain, BUT it is VERY reliable. it will be sad tomorrow watching it being picked up by the tow truck for scrap. I am already looking at buying a more recent sl2 just because of the reliability

My Saturn car was an early graduation gift from my uncle. We purchased the car for $650. The only problem Ive had with it is the water pump going out. The sunroof never worked when I got it, but I never even open the visor. My car is a little noisy, but I just passed it off as being a small car. After my previous car, which had much more room, with a much more spacious interior and a much more powerful engine, it was just a little shock that a car could sound so loud. I've learned to love this Saturn and a newer, fancier one is in view.

I bought this car in dec of 06 for 2700. Two months later the starter goes out, 9 months after that the alternator goes out, 4 months after that the starter goes out again. The sun-roof has leaked since day one, causing the leather seats to crack, my driver side window not to roll down, the radio has been completely fried due to the leaking sun roof. I would not by a saturn with a sun roof ever again. Drinks way too much oil. I put 2 quarts every week in it. Have oil changes every 1000 miles.

I've had this car for 2 years as of the 27th of December. It's a good car, but u must keep up with it. I've had to replace my intake gasket, get a motor mount, and constantly keep oil in. I just replace a fuel injector and a EGR valve a few months ago, but other than that it's a good little car. I have another year to keep before I give it up.

I bought my 96 Saturn SL1 new and it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. Not a fancy car but one that always gets you from point A to B. Like others a very minor problem with the shift linkage which was fixed by dealer even though it was out of warranty. Took on a deer at 50mph, car stopped straight with both hands off steering wheel (was covering my face for protection). Very solid car for the money. Son and I just put a new cylinder head on at 150K but total cost was about $600 which included tools, the head, gaskets, all new hoses etc. Put it back together, started it up and son drove it home. Still gets 37mpg after 14 years. Doesn't burn a drop of oil.

This car we purchased in 2003 as an extra car that would become the kids car. It has an outstanding manual transmission, as well as a powerful engine for what it is. I am always shocked at how the quick the motor is. Interior headliner is sagging like crazy though, which is about the only negative to this vehicle. I can average almost 30 mpg with this car though, which is great.

My wife purchased the car new before we got married. We have owned it for over almost 13 years. The best trip was OH to TN and got almost 50mpg. We now have 240,000 miles on it and it still gets 34+in town and between 40 and 45 on the highway. We took a trip to Niagara Falls summer of 2008 and on the way back had 48mpg. We change the oil every 3,000 miles. Did have a right wheel bearing go out. It is fun to drive with the manual transmission. It still has the original clutch and transmission. When it finally dies, it will be a sad day. I plan to replace it with another Saturn S series but in the 2000 to 2004 year range. Thanks Saturn.

Bought an SC2 a year ago with 144K on it. Needed to put our Tahoe aside for awhile because of the gas prices. We already knew the sc2 was a good little car after purchasing one for our son the previous year(a 95) We've had the 96 SC2 for a year so far trouble free. We love this little car. Fun little car to drive. Great gas mileage. Not very roomy especially the back seat, but if you need to vehicle for a trip to home depot, it's great to have the back seat that goes down to give you alot of trunk space. I prefer the SC2 over the other Saturns because I like the sporty look. If you plan to have a lot of backseat passengers, then it's not the car for you.

I purchased this vehicle in 2002 for 3900. It only has 89900 miles on it. I've had to replace front brakes and also a bracket that held up the altenator which was pricey since it was so hard to get to. Overall, a good dependable little car. I've put off buying new because mine has less mileage than some cars 4 years old. I think it may have been wrecked before I bought it; always a gamble when opening the trunk as it might not close. Also, paint fading on hood badly. Would definitely buy another Saturn product. 12 years old and still going strong. Although, indicator lights go on and off for no reason! Always keeps me guessing. I have it tuned up every year and oil changes.

I have had to do numerous expensive repairs on this car. We did our homework before buying- but still seemed to find a lemon. The transmission had to be worked on a number of times. The moonroof is leaking water into the interior. Both power windows in back have broke, and the AC hasn't worked for years! I won't be buying a Saturn again,

I have never had mechanical problems with this car! It was given to me Christmas of 2002 as my first car with only 36,000 mi. I've driven the heck out of this car and it's on 120,000 mi at this point. Only problem to worry about is the oil, car the burns it like nobody's business. As long as the oil is refilled and changed regularly this car will run for over 200,000 miles without a problem. My friend has a 97 and drove it from New York to Arizona and back without issues and the car has about 230,000 mi on it. Great beginner car, very highly recommended!

I bought this car for $1300 and it was a great deal. It had 175,000 miles on it and it ran like a new car. It handles well, the motor is quick, the trunk is roomy. The only problems I had were the speedometer quit on me a while back (also my odometer) and my alternator went out. I would guess the car has about 250,000 miles on it now. It was a great value. Oh yeah and I hit a deer in it and it didn't even knock out the headlights. I drove off just fine with only a little body damage. Nothing major just a bent up hood. (I wish I could post a picture)

I purchased this car used with 100,000 miles on it, after meeting several other S-car owners. After driving it for an additional 80,000 miles, I find my experience parallels theirs. If you read the owners manual and follow the maintenance schedule, the car will deliver. My car is eleven years old, uses a quart of oil every 3000 miles( normal change interval for me) and runs and looks great. The key is routine care.

But not the best, by far. At 140,000 miles, I have had to donate it to the Kidney Foundation because the transmission locked up. It was noisy from the start, including clicking noises. The alternator was replaced 3 times. Lower engine rebuilt under warranty; upper at my expense. Total repairs paid for, about $2,500. Came to hate the low seat. Nice body, good stainless steel exhaust system. Would not recommend buying one with over 80,000 miles on it. Wish I had bought a Toyota Corolla instead; this car was a mistake.

My first brand new car, never again. The day I drove it off the lot an interior panel fell off and it's been down hill from there. Four new sunroofs, new carpet, front bumper fell off, has never shifted properly (manual) new radio, massive oil leak and frankly Saturn could care less. The dealership puts bandaids on the issues waiting for the warranty to expire. I needed a 5th sunroof at 38,000 miles Saturn would do it for $1200, maybe they should have dealt with the issue 4 roofs ago. At 130,000 miles the roof is now leaking. Tried to trade but not worth anything!!!

I've had this car for 11 1/2 years. I had to replace the fuel pump about 8 years ago. The moonroof started leaking 6 years ago, and it continues to leak. I've had to replace the "head gasket" (I don't even know what that is), and it has been leaking oil for the past 3 years. Now, the power windows in the back don't roll up and the A/C broke a few months ago. Also, for the past 4 years, I've had problems where the engine doesn't start if it's warm, i.e. if you stop at a Starbucks and the engine hasn't cooled off, it doesn't start, but if you wait a few hours it will. But the 3 times I've taken it to a technician, they cannot reproduce the problem.

We bought this car used (1 year old) and have driven it for over 8 years and 100,000 miles. Besides an ac problem (covered under warranty), we've had no problems. We haven't even had a brake or muffler job! I highly recommend the Saturn. If more of you had purchased one, GM would have made Saturn the model for the rest of their divisions and we wouldn't be having a crisis in our auto industry.

I bought my SC2 Coupe in 2002 and I have to say this has been a great car to own. I have had very few problems. In 5 years I have only had to replace the tie-rod, and that's really it. I have the leather seats, and I must say in the summer they are so hot they burn my legs, also in the winter they are freezing! The gas mileage is great! It accelerates well and is faster than I expected it to be. The back seats are way too small, and the interior is so little my head almost hits the roof and I'm 5'5. Overall, I really enjoy having this car.

My husband bought me this little car 10 years ago. It worked well for me. I was a stay at home mom, and the budget was tight. My insurance went down, my gas bills went down, and I had no maintenance bills other than routine oil changes, ect. Two things have gone wrong in ten years. The windshield broke (it was cracked from a rock that fell off a truck) and finally a year later it was hit again, it broke. Second the alternator went. That's it. It just will not die! lol It's a good little car.

With gas prices the way they are and the fact that my '96 Gold SC2 is paid off, driving my car around never felt better. Some other Saturn owners made have had problems, I think it is due to maintance and upkeep. Costs of maintance and repair are high. That is why I do my own work on my car. It's cheaper!! Another reason is the fact that my sc2 is all power and tons of extras!! sunroof, foglamps, spoiler, etc I would buy another saturn some day however they don't build them like mine anymore and the quad coupe they have now is just too large and not sporty enough.

i purchased my SC2 about a 1 1/2 years ago and it was one of the smartest things I've ever done. It gets great gas mileage (38 mpg on hwy) and surprisingly it has a lot of power for only a 1.9L engine. The only thing I've ever had to do on the car besides general maintenance is fix the linkage on the transmission. It has definitely been a great car for me and i would recommend it to anyone. I have been around several of these models of Saturns and noticed head problems on many of these but mine experienced none. (I guess regular oil changes paid off) The car does have guages and not dummy lights. The front seats are comfortable, but adults should not try sitting in back seats.

Rpl'd rad 3 mon. ago. now had to repl tranny 3 weeks ago (went used since car is not worth much). has 191K now (put on 30-40K/yr). hope to hold together for another year or 2 when I plan to replace w/Toyota.

I recently traded "up" from my 1996 Saturn SL2 to a 2002 VW Passat- BIG MISTAKE! The Saturn was the most reliable car ever, best car for the money, although not at all luxurious. I didn't have ANY problems with it until it was 8 years old, and then it was only about $500+ worth of maintenance. Considering the age of the car, I decided to trade it in before more work needed to be done. Considered the Saturn L series, but heard too many complaints about resale value and price, so I bought the Passat. I realize now how much I appreciated the extremely low maintenance required on the Saturn- just the routine oil change, tire rotations, occasional tune-up, and those were all cheap. Great Car

My Saturn is a 96 with 45K on it (amazing I know). I put 30K on it in 3 years, and I've had some similar problems, but overall I loved my car! Come to find out the cylinder head cracked, just as everyone elses'. What a disappointment! It's not worth fixing, since I still owe on the car, but now I wonder if the ION can do any better long term...is it worth it??

I bought my 96 SL2 in 2000. Worked great, didn't need any repairs the first 4 years. Had a few accidents, but the car still ran fine. My only issues are that the engine made TOO MUCH NOISE and the car shook and had bad wind resistance. The interior looked a little cheap, but with the price of the car, I couldn't complain. LOVED the dent resistant side panels. BMW's, Benzes, etc. don't have them. The gas mileage is excellent. The back seat isn't good for adult passengers. Overall, it was a good buy. I only traded mine in two months ago because it needed about $600 worth of repairs and I didn't know what else would eventually go wrong. But for an 8 year old car, that's not bad.

It's a 500mi round trip from home to college which i make almost every weekend to work; it gets 37mpg highway and about 30/32mpg city. Had to do new brakes (pads & roters) but that was expected when i purchased it. Had a flat tire, it was a nail, nothing to do with the car. Insurance is not bad at all, although it did go up about $10 this past 6mo (NYS)

Don't Buy it. Service Dept lies about problems. Many issues over and over again with car engine, parts, etc. Car @ 155k miles totally starts fallin apart. Struts, cylinders, radiator, compressor, fuel system. You name it, it died. Had to donate it to Salvation army instead of selling for decent price. Only good thing, paint still good, gas milage (down to 28 mpg- still good), and cold air when compressor works.

Those who say they have all theese problems so the woulden't reccomend Saturn, especially the one who bought the car with 120,000 mi on it. What do you expect with that milage, probably form a private seller. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Saturn dealer are happy to give the Service hisory for ANY Saturn out there. That's what I did and I got two gems. Saturn's are definatly better than there foreign competition. 115,000 miles and and exterior that sines like new is proof to that.

This vehcile has been a compliant nightmare. It's cost me thousdands in repair. Had I have purchased it brand new it probally wouldn't be so bad. Unfortunately purcashing a used vehicle was the only way I could afford a new car at the time. I've replaced the engine, fuel pump 2-3x, fuel filter, flushed the fuel rails, waterpump, along with the normal regular schedule maintence done to a vehicle. And I stil owe 4500 on this car that isn't worth 5.00. My advise to anyone buying a car, do your homework first. This includes wehre the car is from.

I bought this 1996 SC2 in 2002 with 65,500 miles on it. OVerall i am happy with the car. It is fun to drive and handles well. Have had some mechanical problems that probably shouldn't have happened. The gas mileage is excellent (almost 40mpg on highways) and the people at saturn have been great with my repairs. The interior could be better as mine rattles all over the place. As it gets older i find that chaniging my oil is becoming more of a necessity (used to be after 3000 miles the oil would still look great). I am comfortable inside the car, but a bigger person wouldn't fit, and the backseats are useless.

I purchased this car as a "certified" used Saturn and noticed excess oil use at first change. Conditon worsened to the point that I used a quart in less than 100 miles. Had seals replace - no good. Diagnosis by non-Saturn mechanic is cracked head and subsequent bad rings. I got the service records from the dealership and they clearly indicate that this vehicle had ongoing problems, this was the opposite of what they said when I purchased the car. Saturn admits to oil burning and various problems, but doesn,t help much with problems. I would not under any circumstance recommend the purchase of a Saturn.

I got this car used with 60k miles and right now it has around 100k miles. its not a bad car at all, and you really get to like it after a while. with the leather option, it feels a lot better. i didn't take very good care of it, but it didn't give me much problems either. i think the best part about the car is that you can drive it and not have to worry about every little thing that could happen to it. i drove the car hard on many occasions and the motor runs as strong as the day i got it. just remember to use 5w- 30 oil. not too bad power either, still surprised and still puts a smile on my face after pushing it to its redline.

I will be quite honest because I don't want anyone to have the problems I have had. I bought the Saturn one year used with 25k miles on it and after owning the car for 4 years it has been an utter nightmare. I have experienced...a cracked cylinder head at 65k,broken fuel pump, two alternators, 3 struts, transmission problems, electrical system problems, 20 mpg, and a partridge in a pear tree. I have steered many people away from buying Saturns and after the way the saturn Corporation treated me I will never again allow a friend or cooworker buy a Saturn.

I bought my Saturn brand new 8 years ago. I had all of the required checks done on it, and aside from a #2 gear replacement, I have never had a problem...until now. One of the cylinder heads is cracked, and there was never any indication of a problem until I checked my fluids and noticed oil mixing with the coolant. Apparently, this is a defect in this type of engine. This will be a minimum of $1500.00 to fix, about equal to the worth of the car in good shape. Buyers beware! Fixing this problem is no longer covered by Saturn or GM!

Purchased new 8 years ago. Very good (38-40) MPG and trouble free in general (maybe $200 in non-routine maintenace costs over 8 years). Religously followed the service schedule. However, be aware that some SOHC engines from this time period were shipped with defective heads. These defects (casting defects which can result in cracks in the head around the cam shaft--which will then allow oil and coolant to mix) may not show up for some time. It struck my car out of the blue at 98,000 miles. When/if they do crack one is looking at replacing the head, which is $1,500+. For my car, the cost to repair would equal the book value.

I've had the alternator replaced twice, and the battery replaced 3 times. My Sunroof frame is cracked and leaks... will cost $900+ to repair. It' has started burning oil in the last 10 thousand miles, but somewhat expected. My fuel economy has dropped over the last year. I have had all 3 motor mounts replaced, well before the car hit 100K miles.

I have put a tremendous amount of miles on this car. I am up to 116000, and besides needing a new radiator and clutch(to be expected on any car with that milage), it runs great. Starts instantly no matter how cold it is. The best part is how I can just get in it and take it on a road trip anywhere, and never have to worry about. It is amazingly comfortable since the driving position is ideal. Everything is within reach, and the seat is highly adjustable for any driver. I am six feet tall and am plenty comfortable. Build quality does stink though, many rattles and squeaks. But overall reliability and gas milage is great! Great first car!!!

Now that it has over 126,000 ,and an oil leak and I am at the end of the loan....it needs to be replaced. Door locks and windows are broke and repairs for these components are several hundred dollars EACH. The repairs I have had to make are identical to the repairs reported by other Saturn owners in this review.

This is a 2001 3Dr SC2. It has been reliable....so far. However, despite proper maintenance it shifts extremely hard. I thought it was only when it wasn't completely warmed up, but it happened all the time. This is an automatic, so I am not mis-shifting a manual. On the other hand, the radio system is awesome for an OMB unit. In addition, the interior room is very scant. My boyfriend is 6'1". He has about 1/2 inch of room above his head (which will do), his legs are really cramped though. No place for him to stretch his legs. Plus, absolutely no room in the back seat.

I have an SL2 with a seemingly unique black/gold paint scheme (black until bright light hits, then reflects as gold). The paint scheme is awesome, and i've never seen it on another car of any type. It has a 5-speed manual, which is a necessity if you want this car to accelerate. With the manny tranny it has tons more pop than most cars in its class. The exterior has held up great, the paint is in perfect condition, and the dent-resistant panels do their job. Handling is unequaled among other cars in its class. Interior is comfortable but is very cheap. Has been for the most part reliable, replaced alternator and shifter cable, now at 79k miles.

It has been a great car for a college student because it gets awesome gas mileage and has required virtually no repairs. The only thing I've replaced are the brakes, tires, and alternator. It may not be the flashiest or the fastest car out there but it is definitely a good starter car for a young person.

We needed a four door car once our son was born. We got our '96 (two years older than our trade in vehicle) with 83K and have now owned the car for about six months and have put 10K trouble free miles on it. The car is great to drive, with excellent handling, decent acceleration, and good brakes, and it's economical. I have a few complaints. The blower is noisy on high, there's a few creaks and rattles. The transmission was shifting harshly, so I serviced the transmission, and it seems to shift well now. The A/C isn't quite as good as our old Escort.

This car proved to be a solid investment for me. I drove it pretty hard, putting over 100K miles on it it about 5 years, and other than changing tires and the battery c couple times, it has had no major machanical issues. The only real drawback is that I am 6' tall guy and it was a little short on a leg room...but other than that it was every dollar I spent on it.

Purchased this '96 SL1 because we had so much luck with a '95. Still have the 96 and am selling it to my son to go to college. Always thought the instrument cluster looked like an Indy racer. No guts whatsoever and starting to develop a few rattles but absolutly never refused to start ever.Paint lasts forever and still starts with one turn of the key. Great inexpensive vehicle

I'm a spirited driver and drive my cars rather rough however, since I've had my saturn I've put nearly 30K on it and its still running strong. The twin cam engine mated to the five speed make an excellent couple giving me the most performance the engine has to offer. The fit and finish on this vehicle is 5 times better than on my Grand Am. Reliability has been outstanding for this car, I haven't had anything major fail and am up to 130K. With regularly scheduled maintance and preventive maintance I believe this car will make it to 200K easily. I'd recommend this car to anyone who needs inexpensive transportation with decent looks and performance.

The car has had problems from day 1. Although it started out with only squeak and rattle issues, it quickly progressed to power windows not going up (or down), power sun-roof not closing, water leaking in through the roof, consuming about a quart of oil/1k miles (despite having the oil changed religiously by the dealer at 3k miles), spark plug wires fouled multiple times, etc. etc. etc. We bought this car fully loaded brand new and have only 60k miles on it. We've had 5x the problems on this car than my Nissan Stanza that has 160k miles on it and is 4 years older. Sorry, but unfortunately, the domestic automakers need schooling from the Japanese.

Sadly, I totaled my 96 SL1 Monday. I owned it beginning to end. While the SL series was never as fun to drive as my previous VWs, the upkeep costs were a tiny fraction of the old days. In the eight years I owned the car my major repairs included - 1 head gasket, 2 oxygen sensors, a piston part, 1 timing belt, and about 25-30 tires - note this is in 210,000 miles! The engine was eating oil (started at about 160K) and I developed a weird problem with the wipers at about 200k. It handled well enough but snow and rain driving really require very good tires for control, also it did bounced in the wind. FYI - I'm picking up it's replacement tomorrow - 1996 SL2.

Horrible car!! The engine is burning oil excessively - leak gasket. The engine needs to be replaced at 68K miles after meticulous care of the car. We are very disappointed in our first attempt to purchase Saturn. The dealership folks would not comment...said maybe we drove it hard. They are talking to two electrical engineers who has been meticulous with routine maintenance and babying the car. I would not recommend Saturn for reliable cars.

I bought this car used in 1999 with 60000 miles on it and it ran good until it was totaled a few weeks ago with 140000 miles on it. My car was hit from behind by a van and it pushed the trunk into the back seat and pushed in the gas tank it is amazing that it didn't explode and no one was really hurt just a few bruises and sore neck. That was the third accident it had been in.

My car has constently been in the shop for one reason or another, never costing less than $500. I will never again by a Saturn or an American made car again. Nothing but problems. The dealership would not help me due to the fact that I bought the car private party and not though them, very very bad serivce department.

We started off with 14 warranty repairs during the first year of owning our brand new car. The alternator is only good for 36k miles. I have lost count on the number of spark plugs and wire sets that the dealer tried to correct many misfire problems. My independent mechanic had not trouble diagnosing a cracked crank sensor. The dealer put in new valve seals at 59k to slow down th oil usage with only partial success. After 50k, synthetic oil is the only thing that will keep the valve train from tapping for the first mile each morning. The EGR valve has gone bad twice, the A/C unit burned up last year ($602 for the part!!).

In searching for a economy car along the lines of a Civic, I ended up buying a 4-door, Saturn SL. After 40,000 miles in 2 1/2 years, I've had one incident, but it was caused by shoddy road-work. I switch fluids every 3000, keep everything in proper order, and the car keeps on running. I will say that it's like a sick horse when it comes to engine performance, but I never bought it to beat any cars at the green light. I bought it for longevity and mileage, and it has come through so far on both ends. I can make a 7 hour road trip on one tank of gas.

Our son had a high speed head on collision with the Saturn yesterday. After sliding off the highway and across the median, he ran head on into a 4-wheel drive pick up. Even though the whole front end was compressed, the dash and structure held and he was able to get out and walk away with just a few aches and pains... The only downside was that the car caught fire and was totally burned up, almost beyond recognition. But we are impressed with the body integrity of the Saturn and it's safety features. It was also a fun car to drive and we had no problems with it. We would definitely buy another!!!!!!!

We have had all the maintaince performed by saturn but things still break. We can not use the left rear window because it jumps its track and will not go up. The left front lock on the door is broke, and just the other day the button on the parking brake broke off. In the past the moon roof was stuck opening and would not close. The car had problems with the spark plugs and the wires to the spark plugs corroding a couple of times. The cable to the stick shift broke a few months ago and the car was stuck in reverse. Saturn built a car that seems to break real easily and that is why I will never buy another saturn.

Stuck speedometer (replaced). Short in electrical sunroof (fixed). Oil leaked from gear box (fixed). Clutch burned up (replaced). Generator failed (replaced). Saturn service is polite. My next vehilce will be a Honda or Toyota. The build quality is very poor. Cheap materials for the interior.

Car looks great but has been nothing but problems - some minor but still aggravating, but others quite major. It has only 65,000 and now has a cracked cylinder head. Oil leaked into the cooling system, and vice-versa. Come to find out, its a known manufacturing defect especially on single-cam engines of this vintage. Add this to numerous leaks, squeaks, breakdowns, and being underpowered - I've had enough. No more Saturns for me.

I bought my automatic gold colored saturn at 116,000 miles. It has 120,000 now. For me being at just 6 ft.it has a lot of room. Luv the trunk space. No rust; the fiberglass panels have held up well. I've had the usual problems: quart of oil at every thousand miles, needed O2 sensor replaced at time of purchase. And, my front windshield gasket has breached. Water all over on the driver side. Aside from the problems this car runs great. With some maintenance and continued care, I exspect this car to work well for my daily commutes. And at 34 mpg. I can afford a little better to fill up.

This has been a wonderful car. We bought our '96 SL2 in July of '99 thinking about a family. It had all the features we were looking for and that it handles well in bad weather. The only problems I have had is the driver's window regilator went out at about 55,000 miles and the alternator went out about seven months ago at 85,000 miles. But this car has held up with harder driving. Now that we have a family, though, we are finding that it is a bit cramped. We are thinking about the new Vue.

Had to replace alternator, A/C Evaporator, and a minor part in the clutch (manual trans.) Dealer service has been excellent. Burns a quart of oil every 1500 miles. Interior comfort isn't that great, engine is loud and underpowered even for an economy car. However, gas mileage is excellent. On long trips, I average north of 40 mpg. The paint still looks great after six years. As a testament to the design, I was rear-ended by an Accord several months ago, and came out of it with a tiny scratch on the bumper (the accord took over $1500 in damage).

Great Gas Mileage! Fun and sporty car. Good value for your $$. Buy an automatic transmission instead of a 5- Speed though. The 5-Speed gets tiring driving in the city. Great brakes on the car! It had 63,500 miles on it and never had to overhaul the brake system once.

Gimme a break. If you have had your car for 170K, of course things are going to go bad on it! If you don't check your oil, of course you're going to have problems with it! If you only listen to your stereo at the highest level, of course you are going to blow the speakers. I love my Saturn. I have about 65K on it. I have had no problems with it since I bought it in 2000. I have yet to make a repair on it. My husband and I both owned Corsica's when we met, and trust me, the Saturn is 10 times better. In fact, we are looking at replacing my husband's crappy Corsica with a Saturn this weekend.

At first the car was Great! but right around the 90k mark things started to go bad. I've had to replace the alt. twice. and now I've been told the car is burning oil and I need a new engine. NO WAY! The 2,3 and 4th gears went out on me in traffic. that was fun! and it's been goin downhill from there. I will say this its a tough car. I've been hit 3 times and you wouln't know it. Once by a Izuzu Rodeo which the Saturn torn up the rodeo and I walked a way with a scracth and a 2in hole in the bumper. It served me well, could have been better though mechanic friend asked me what I drove. I said saturn "keep oil in it"he retorted. boy was he ever right!

Bought'96 SL1 in'98, now over 160k miles.Runs as good as when bought.ONLY problem ever was a blown fuse.It can run on no gas & oil. With regular maintence to include new plugs, wipers, tires and oil changes, this car has been 100% dependable. Although it IS fun to drive, the 5-speed gets tiring in the city. This can be corrected by parking it for a few hours, and whaalaa...when you start it up it's like getting into it for the 1st time again!Only downfall is size. Not a lot of room, which detracts from comfort on trips. Rides smooth, minimal outside noise, ice cold air, descent stereo, quick stops, good get up and go, especially when it's not fully loaded.

I bought my Saturn new b/c of the "no haggle" hype. It has given my grief ever since. Thank God I bought the extended warranty, b/c with out it, I would have been SOL. I've had problems with the transmission, the coolant system, and oil consumption. Recently the cylinder head cracked (happened 8 days after the warranty expired, to their credit, Saturn was "nice" enough to pick up the tab, as the service tech reminded me over and over). The speakers have all blown and the sunroof leaks. No More Saturns for ME!

The only problems I've had to date is the need to replace the alternator, battery, timing belt and I the oxygen metor. I have practically driven this car to the ground. I initally got the car with 30,000 miles now it is well over 75,000 and runs as good as new. This car has travel with me from NY to BOston and BACK. ANd the service I recieved from the Saturn dealership was exceptional. Its a great car in my opinion.

Decent car, but had a cylinder head problem, tha Saturn knows about, but won't recall. If using large amounts of oil, contact the dealer before 60k miles or their special policy will expire and you are out of luck. Only dealer or corporate office will reimburse you for the cylinder head issue. Special Policy is a recall with time limit which benefits only Saturn, only holds them financially responsible for a limited time. Also when we bought the car, 2 months into it, the speakers rattled, I was told to put cotton behind the speakers around the speakers , since they were not meant for a high performance stereo. It was the factory stereo.

Not only do I enjoy driving this car, but it really is great on gas and maintainence (which is good for a poor high school senior like me!) I have had my Saturn for three years. It now has 170k miles on it. I have replaced the alternator, drive train belt and battery three times. THREE TIMES EACH!!! I have also replaced the tensioner for the belt, the idler pulley. If the cigarette lighter blows, so will the door locks. They are on the same circuit. Now I have a problem with a blown head gasket and missing motor mounts. The one thing I can say about a Saturn is that they can run with no oil. It's oil consumption is very random. Many times I have pulled out a dry dipstick. Gas milage is terrible and also intermittent. Generally getting around 230-280 miles per tank. Terrible terrible car. Too many problems for what it is worth.

I bought this 1996 Saturn used in '99.I have had nothing but problems from this vehicle. I don't plan on ever buying another Saturn and i know plenty of people who feel the same way.

We bought our SL2 with 17k miles. It now has 106k. The interior is well designed but the seats are low which causes difficulty getting in and out of the car. The Ignition failed at 18,000 miles and a water pump fail at 80,000 miles. which isn't bad. The engineering flaws we've noted include an inherent problem with the front brake rotors causing the wheel to shimmy especially when stopping. We also have major rust on both rear rockers which is obvious when you open the back doors. It also burns oil and has since about 65k miles. Engine compression is great so no idea why but it uses a quart every 2000 miles.

I Love My Saturn

I traded my 93 Staurn in on the 96 and the only problems I have had are a dead battery and a headlight going out. Great Car!

Still Looks New!

Excellent bright red paint job that is not found on newer Saturns! Beautiful sleek body with hidden headlights; handles like an expensive sports car!

It's actually pretty decent.

If you want a little runabout that is reasonably flexible but is cheap to maintain and reliable, then this may well be it. Pushing 6 yrs, 90+k on mine and no major trips to the Shop, just one recall rework on the enginge. I've hauled everything from 7foot Christmas trees, disasembled 80 inch wardrobes, all sorts of boxed and packages over the years and the little car has always delivered. It's no race car or luxury car, but it can carry things my much larger Galant cannot, thanks to the folding rear seats. If I have one main complaint, it's that the thing turns ike a pig. The aforementioned Galant can actually turn inside of my saturn!

100000 and still going strong

Bought our SL1 5 spd used with 89000 miles. Now 18000 miles later it is still a great economical car! Have only had to replace the O2 sensors. Drove it on a 1000 mile trip and comfort was great for a small car, only missed having cruise.

Great little car

Brought my car used abought a year ago with 107K miles on it. Now with almost 120K miles on it my sl2 has proved to be a very good investment. I have never had a problem with it except for an 02 sensor that went bad and that was a cheap fix. Acceleration is great in this car even though it only has 124hp dont let that fool you it has a good amount of power. It handles great and does very well in emergency maneuvers and is good on gas. The car is an excellent buy and should not be overlooked.

It Just Feels Right

Sold on the car from the minute I drove it, I have found that the car just seems to fit around me perfectly. (Mind you, I'm only 5' 7") You get that feeling of being close to the road when behind the wheel. It's easy at the pump, but gives you the extra umph when you want it and it has kept that umph over time.

FLIMFLAMED!

Purchased "new", this car ran just fine....for about six months! It's been all downhill (or towed) since. Even with a 50,000 miles extended warranty and regular dealer servicing, I've spent over $4,000 in mechanical repairs! In fact, it's "dead" in my garage now. I've decided to sell (if I can find a victim)and upgrade to a Hugo.
